Happy New Year, Everybody! Some of my favorite plein air themes contain water. There was a time when we were always on the water, be it river or lake. With so many locales to choose from, it was always hard to decide. This 11x14 pastel was done on the San Marcos. Can anyone remember what those big leaves in the foreground are called, nonscientifically.

Plein air is when the painter creates on site. CGM is a member of a group of watercolor artists who get together regularly to paint in a designated spot. One of their favorite spots is Zilker Botanical Gardens, though the group goes all over, including Bull Creek. cgmfineart.com

Chris has painted a Northern Mockingbird (Mimus polyglots) perched quietly among a forest of green leaves. The soft watercolor layers create a peacefully serene atmosphere, as if the viewer is standing amidst the lush foliage.

A mockingbird's tail is long, often the same length as its body. They are known for their constant singing day or night and for their territorial nature. Commonly found in North America, they mimic calls of other birds and random sounds. The popular mockingbird is the state bird of five states.
