Testosterone gets all the attention. But the more potent androgen at the tissue level is DHT (dihydrotestosterone), and your genes have a say in how much of it you make.

Here's the mechanism: the enzyme 5-alpha reductase converts testosterone into DHT. DHT binds the androgen receptor with roughly 2 to 3 times greater strength than testosterone itself, which is why it drives so much androgenic signaling in hair follicles, skin, and prostate tissue.

That enzyme is encoded by the SRD5A genes. SRD5A1 and SRD5A2 are the two main versions, sitting in different tissues (SRD5A2 is dominant in prostate and skin). Variants in SRD5A1 are associated with differences in 5-alpha reductase activity and how much DHT you may produce locally.

There's even a dietary lever: zinc modulates 5-alpha reductase activity. Pumpkin seeds, oysters, red meat all carry it.
