“I wear a lot of hats”

Founders say it like a badge. Usually it’s a warning light.

Wearing every hat doesn’t make you versatile. It means every function in your business is capped at what one tired person can give it part-time. Your marketing is as good as the marketing hat gets on a Tuesday afternoon between four other jobs. Same for finance. Same for everything.

The hats aren’t proof of how capable you are. They’re a list of roles your business has outgrown you doing.

You don’t earn respect for wearing all the hats. You earn a ceiling. Hand them to people whose whole job is that one hat.

There is no cheat code for building a business.

No course, AI prompt, or magic app will replace having smart people around you.

The businesses that grow faster usually have one thing in common: they bring in people who know what they’re doing.

It’s not a gimmick.

It’s just how business works.

Cheap help feels airtight. Budget’s tight, you need help, so you hire the cheapest person who can technically do it. Money saved.

Then the real bill shows up, just never on an invoice.

You write the instructions. You check the work, because you can’t not check. You redo what came back wrong, have the awkward conversation, then another. The thing you hired out is still on your plate. You didn’t hand off the work. You added a layer of managing it.

Now picture the good hire you skipped for costing more. They ask two questions and disappear with the problem. It comes back done, right, the first time. You never think about it again. That’s the whole point of hiring, and it’s the part cheap quietly drops.

Cheap help is priced by the hour. Good help by the outcome. Go cheap and you supply the outcome yourself, in your own time, for free.

Stop hiring the cheapest person who can do it. Hire the one you’ll never think about again.

You were taught leadership comes in one size: a full-time VP at six figures.

So when you needed that judgment and couldn’t carry it, you guessed, or handed it to someone junior.

A fractional exec runs the function two days a week. You weren’t too small, just shopping the wrong size.

If your business can’t run without you, you don’t own a business.

You own a job.

If you plan to sell someday, buyers aren’t buying you. They’re buying the machine you’ve built.

Ask yourself: if you disappeared tomorrow, who would solve the problems?

If the answer is still you, it’s time to build more support.

“Faster to do it myself” feels smart. Once, it is.

But a 15-minute task you keep every workday is 62 hours a year. Gone. Forever. To skip one 30-minute conversation that would’ve handed it off for good.

You’re not saving time. You’re paying a tax in your evenings.

Spend the 30 minutes. It’s the cheapest thing you’ll do all year.

Most owners ask “who’s the best person I can afford?” Wrong question.

Ask this: one deep gap, or forty small ones? Opposite problems, opposite hires.

A deep gap needs depth. The finance you’re guessing at, the marketing you’re winging. That’s a specialist.

Forty small ones need breadth. Forty things done at all and off your plate. That’s a generalist.

Hire the wrong shape and nothing changes. Name the gap before you fill it.

We all have a delusion budget.

For business owners, it sounds like:

“I’ll handle social media myself this quarter.”

You won’t.

You’ve said it for nine quarters.

At some point, you have to admit you’re not going to become a CMO through vibes and willpower.

Hire someone who already knows how to do it.

You have a job you never applied for and don’t get paid for. Chief of Everything Else.

It’s the role that catches whatever falls through the cracks. The follow-up nobody owns. The tool that breaks. The client who goes quiet. None of it is your actual job, and all of it lands on you anyway.

You don’t even see it as work. You call it being on top of things.

But that invisible job is eating the hours you needed for the real one. Hand it to someone whose actual title is Everything Else. That’s the whole point of an assistant.

Every problem gets the same two options: full-time hire, or do it yourself.

That’s the whole wardrobe. Take on a salary you’re unsure about, or pile the work onto your own plate and pay for it in your evenings.

But most gaps aren’t full-time gaps. They’re a few hours of the right person. Senior judgment on Tuesdays. An assistant who takes the bottom third of your list and never hands it back.

The problem was never the cost. You only let yourself see two sizes, and neither fit.

Most problems need something in between. That’s where the good talent’s been hiding.
