Recently completed a military heritage scale model for a Navy veteran who served on the destroyer USS Turner Joy (DD-951). This ship was involved in the August 1964 Gulf of Tonkin Incident that led to increased US involvement in Vietnam. This was a "kit bash" project using detail parts from a polystyrene plastic kit and a resin kit. The model is in 1:340 scale.

In an unmarked grave in the approximate location of these Confederate flags lies the body of William Harrison "Harry" Wolfe. Somehow, the local records in Montgomery County, IN indicate William was a Confederate veteran of the Civil War.

Using some sketchy information provided by the local Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War (SUVCW) camp, Gilmore Consulting was able to prove William was actually a Union veteran of Company E, 5th West Virginia Infantry Regiment.

William and his large family lived in the part of the country along the Ohio River where Ohio, Kentucky, and (West) Virginia come together. He was living in Ashland, Kentucky when the war broke out and traveled 9 miles upriver to Ceredo, Virginia (later West Virginia) to enlist in the Union Army.

The SUVCW is working to correct the records and contacting the Veterans Administration to provide an appropriate veterans headstone for this veteran that was lost to history and poor recordskeeping.

Genealogy is an exacting and often confusing science. Unfortunately, some people try to bend the rules....they heard from a family member (usually an elder) that they are related to some well-know historical figure, so they set out prove the family "myth". The genealogist has no such objective. Like a pilot "flying blind" on instruments, genealogists follow the data wherever it leads. Sometimes there are pleasant surprises for the client, but other times the truth might hurt a little.
