We’ve all seen an ant hill pop up directly along the edge of the pool deck or paver walkway.

Depending on your chosen liquid product, here’s an extra step for you to help ant proof your property:

- Exterior Crack & Crevice. This is one of the areas that can get skipped by even the most reputable companies. We typically will saturate the crack in between any impermeable surface such as concrete and the soil/ rock that abuts it in an act we call “gridlocking.”

This ensures that we’re actually getting product in the hidden shaded areas that ants traverse during the heat of the summer.

Found this mound of Bicolored Pyramid Ants today! Here are a couple key ID points for them:

• Most notably they build a volcano shaped mound. When you disturb the nest an eruption of ants follows.

• They have a distinctive Chemical smell when crushed. We describe it as if Lacroix made a sharpie flavor.

• Their Bicolor name comes from the Reddish Orange head and Thorax, with the black gaster at the rear.

These ants are more nuisance than dangerous, rarely biting. Their natural defense is to emit the aforementioned sharp chemical smell.

DIY treatment includes a standard non repellent liquid application along foraging trails, followed by a borate based bait application.

Fun fact: Black Widow spider webs feature a structured three-level architecture composed of 1. an upper zone of stronger structural threads 2. an irregular messy central area for catching flying prey, and 3. vertical sticky threads that extend to ground level for catching crawling prey. We found this web while performing an Initial Service in Litchfield Park, AZ.

Watch your ankles! Black widows are out in force right now around the West Valley. Here are some tips to help identify a Black Widow web, the last one is foolproof:

• Black Widow webs are constructed in a very untidy and irregular manner. Web geometry consists of mainly triangles and pointed polygons, with very little or no rounded shapes.

• Along with this irregular shape, the webs will also be three dimensional (vs a flat 2d web). This multi level web system is utilized in order to catch flying AND crawling insects… and pretty much anything else, as shown in the first photo 🦂

• Black Widow webs are constructed with silk that is exceptionally strong—boasting a tensile strength up to 70% stronger than other spiders similar in size. By weight, Black Widow silk is significantly stronger than high-grade steel and Kevlar.

• You will often find heavier organic debris in these webs as well.

• Black Widow webs are constructed typically waist level or below. This means that often times they go overlooked by even some Pest Management Professionals.
