Watch your ankles! Black widows are out in force right now around the West Valley. Here are some tips to help identify a Black Widow web, the last one is foolproof:

• Black Widow webs are constructed in a very untidy and irregular manner. Web geometry consists of mainly triangles and pointed polygons, with very little or no rounded shapes.

• Along with this irregular shape, the webs will also be three dimensional (vs a flat 2d web). This multi level web system is utilized in order to catch flying AND crawling insects… and pretty much anything else, as shown in the first photo 🦂

• Black Widow webs are constructed with silk that is exceptionally strong—boasting a tensile strength up to 70% stronger than other spiders similar in size. By weight, Black Widow silk is significantly stronger than high-grade steel and Kevlar.

• You will often find heavier organic debris in these webs as well.

• Black Widow webs are constructed typically waist level or below. This means that often times they go overlooked by even some Pest Management Professionals.

This is a Camel spider, also referred to as a Sun Spider or Wind Scorpion. They are typically found in exterior cracks or crevices, and occasionally inside homes. In this instance, the specimen was caught on a monitoring glue board placed on the side of a garage door. Notably, Camel Spiders do not belong to the spider or scorpion families. Instead, they belong to their own taxonomical order, Solifugae. A key distinction between true spiders (Araneae), scorpions (Scorpiones), and Solifuges is the absence of venom glands, stingers, and silk spinnerets in Solifuges. As a result, they do not leave behind webs, bite, or sting.
