We went out to help one of our roofing partners remove a solar array so they could properly track down and repair a leak. Once we got underneath the system, we found a little bit of everything.
Some of the worst solar installation practices we’ve seen, critter damage that left holes in the roof, and multiple DIY-style patches from previous attempts to stop the leaking.
This is exactly why removing solar panels for roof work isn’t just about getting the panels out of the way. Once the system comes off, you finally get a chance to see what’s been happening underneath it and address the problems correctly before everything goes back on.
Our roofing partner can now repair the roof the right way, and when it’s ready, we’ll reinstall the solar properly.
If you have a roof leak underneath an existing solar system, make sure the roofer and solar contractor are working together. Sometimes the real problem isn’t what you can see from the ground.
