In a world becoming inundated with AI, we got curious: What is the environmental impact of an individual's AI use, and can composting offset it? We did the math, and the results are surprising. 😱

What we found: Spread across a year, composting offsets about 2,236 prompts every day. If you used AI for eight hours a day, seven days a week, you would need to ask it a question roughly every 13 seconds for the entire year to get there. 🤖

None of this means we should shrug at the environmental impacts of AI just because we compost. Data centers can place substantial demands on electrical grids and water supplies, and that weight is disproportionally carried by the communities nearby. On top of that, data centers are frequently and disproportionately located in low socioeconomic status (SES) neighborhoods, rural towns, and marginalized communities. AI companies should be responsible for carrying the environmental and social cost of their products, not the people that happen to live next door. Read more at the link in bio!

POP QUIZ: Why is PLA so difficult to break down even at temperatures well above 140°? Swipe through to find out what conditions are needed for PLA to degrade. ⏩️

GMT's Earth Flow performed the best of any system for PLA degradation; the mix of automated irrigation, regular turning to homogenize the moisture and break up PLA, and aeration lead to a hot, well mixed compost pile perfect for compostable packaging degradation!
