From this week’s Valley Ag Voice, a reminder to when driving through rural areas:

Throughout California, August is marked by the busy harvest season, with tomatoes, almonds, pistachios, and grapes being harvested at all hours of the day and night — right as school buses, parents on morning drop-off runs, and students walking or biking to class return to our rural roads in force.

That overlap is exactly why Holloway Agriculture is once again promoting its Public Service Announcement campaign through October, urging rural drivers to use extra caution while traveling through agricultural areas where harvest machinery and crews are working.

This season, the campaign is back with a new tagline reminding drivers in rural areas to: “SLOW DOWN. STAY ALERT. SAVE LIVES.”

In honor of Pistachio Week, this week’s post comes from the Bakersfield area where pistachio harvest is underway.

Production is reportedly down across some pistachio orchards this season due to an early bloom combined with extreme spring heat in the Central Valley, but this customer orchard is bustling right along.

Thanks to all of our growers and field workers hustling to get through harvest and help put food on our tables.

REMINDER: Be sure to give harvest crews, equipment operators and truck drivers a break when driving through rural regions this time of year.

Harvest equipment is often oversized and slow moving, and dusty roads and large trailers can affect visibility when driving through harvest zones, so please use caution when driving through these areas and !

August is a busy time of year with harvest getting underway for almonds and other California crops, and kids going back to school, so Holloway and our partners want to remind rural drivers to please slow down while traveling through agricultural areas.

Pay extra attention when crossing intersections, or busy and often dusty harvest zones, and let’s keep all of our farm workers, drivers, residents and children safe!

According to the Census of Agriculture, nearly 4.5 million farm vehicles operate on U.S. farmlands, and those vehicles are overrepresented in road crashes considering their limited miles traveled. Additionally, several studies have found a majority of farm vehicle collisions occur in the fall, during the grueling harvest season.

On we’re seeing some hull split today in early maturing almond varieties in the Central Valley.

The 2026 crop remains ahead of last year’s, with kernels fully solidified across varieties.

Hull split and NOW management remain the focus as we push through the dog days of summer.

We spent part of the week capturing photos across all of Holloway's field operations — from our historic gypsum mine, to our landfill, composting, material recovery and logistics facilities.

As the weather heats up and the summer returns, it felt like a good time to recognize the hardworking folks behind Holloway.
