Bed bugs can withstand temperatures from nearly freezing to 122 degrees Fahrenheit, which makes controlling them extremely difficult. However, they often succumb after a few days of exposure to temperatures below 32 degrees Fahrenheit. The bad news is our homes provide the perfect habitat for bed bugs to survive during the winter months.

Sometimes, raccoons or possums searching for food and shelter to escape the harsh weather can cause damage to properties. They can end up inside homes through open doors, chimneys, or even seek for shelter under your porch.

While these animals are trying to wait out the winter, they can chew through insulation, wires, or die in an out-of-reach area. To prevent any unwanted tenants, keep all trash covered and seal up any openings below porches, in garages, or anywhere they may slip in.

Pest-proofing tips during winter:

➡️ Install door sweeps on exterior doors and repair damaged screens.
➡️ Screen vents and openings to chimneys.
➡️ Seal cracks and holes on the outside of the home, including areas where utilities and pipes enter the home, using caulk and/or steel wool.
➡️ Store food in airtight containers and dispose of garbage regularly.
➡️ Keep attics, basements and crawl spaces well ventilated and dry.
➡️ Replace loose mortar and weather stripping around the basement foundation and windows.
➡️ Eliminate all moisture sites, including leaking pipes and clogged drains that provide the perfect breeding site for pests.
➡️ Inspect items such as boxes, grocery bags and other packages brought into the home.
➡️ Store firewood at least 20 feet away from the house and keep shrubbery trimmed and cut back from the house.

Installing a chimney cap can help reduce the entry of pests and help limit rainwater and moisture buildup in your chimney that can lead to other pest problems within your home.

Before bringing in firewood, make sure there are not bird or other animal nests on or near it. These nests can harbor mites, ticks, and fleas. Keeping your firewood tightly wrapped and covered can help reduce the number of critters inside it.

Don’t neglect your chimney during your firewood and fireplace pest prevention.
