Same pond, different fish...
These two fish were captured in an Electrofishing survey, and represent two distinct classes of fish found in one pond. The fish on the top, a much younger generation of fish is feeding well and maintaining a healthy weight for its size.
The fish on the bottom however, belongs to a much older class of fish as discovered by the previous year's age and growth study.
These older fish are approaching the end of their natural lives and are failing to keep a healthy weight.
During harvest, it is important to keep factors such as fish age in mind, as they can play a key role in the health of your fishery.
These two fish had access to the same food sources, yet one was over 100% relative weight and was released, while one was under 50% relative weight and was harvested.
Of course, this is an extreme example, but most fisheries will see a range of health, even among fish of the same length, and harvesting based on relative weight is a valuable way to ensure your fishery stays healthy.
