Most small businesses dont get fined because theyre dishonest. They get fined because theyre disorganized.

Missing a filing deadline. Losing a document. Forgetting to update a policy. These arent crimes β€” theyre symptoms of a system that runs on memory instead of process.

This week, Im breaking down how to build a compliance system that runs without you. Day 1 of 7: Compliance Without the Chaos.

Taxes aren't sexy. Let's just get that out of the way. 🫣

But you know what is? Not panicking on April 14.

Three things that make tax season actually bearable:

1️⃣ Automate your expense tracking. Right now. Do it today.
2️⃣ Check your estimated payments every quarter. Not once a year. Every quarter.
3️⃣ Have a system, not a prayer.

Do these three things, and next April, you'll be the person who's actually calm during tax season.

And that? That's pretty sexy. 😏

Follow for more tax tips that don't put you to sleep.

Taxes are just the scorecard.

Here's a reframe that changed how I think about taxes:

Taxes aren't a punishment. They're the cost of doing business in a system that lets you build something.

You paid taxes? Great. That means you made money.

You got a refund? Also fine β€” that's an interest-free loan to the government, but it's also a forced savings plan.

The real goal isn't to pay zero taxes. The real goal is to pay the right amount β€” no more, no less β€” and keep more of what you earn through smart planning.

That's what we do at Marico Consulting. We help you build systems so taxes are just another line item, not a source of anxiety.

Quarterly taxes are due soon. Don't panic.

If you're self-employed or run a small business, estimated quarterly taxes are probably on your radar. And if they're not β€” they should be.

Here's the simple version:

β€’ Due: April 15, June 15, September 15, January 15
β€’ Penalty for underpayment: roughly 7% on what you owe
β€’ Safe harbor: pay 100% of last year's tax (110% if AGI > $150k)

Set a recurring reminder. Automate the payment. Move on with your life.

Taxes are a system, not a crisis.

5 tax deductions you're probably leaving on the table.

Most business owners overpay by thousands. Not because they're bad at business β€” because they don't know what they don't know.

Here are 5 deductions that fly under the radar:

1. Home office β€” even if you rent. The simplified method is $5/sq ft up to 300 sq ft.
2. Professional development β€” courses, conferences, books. If it makes you better at your business, it's deductible.
3. Health insurance premiums β€” self-employed? Your premiums are above-the-line.
4. Software and subscriptions β€” every tool you use to run your business.
5. Retirement contributions β€” you're paying yourself AND reducing taxable income.

The most expensive word in business? 'Later.'

Later I'll organize my receipts. Later I'll call my accountant. Later I'll set up that system.

Later is expensive. Here's why:

β€’ A missed deduction from last year is gone forever
β€’ Late filing penalties add up fast
β€’ Rush-hour accounting costs more (and stresses you out)

Five minutes a week on your books saves you five hours at tax time. That's a 60x return on your time.

What kind of return are you getting on 'later'?

The IRS changed the rules. Again.

Every year the tax code shifts. And if you're running a business, those shifts can cost you β€” or save you β€” real money.

Here's what changed this year that actually matters for small business owners:

1. Standard mileage rate went up. If you drive for business, track every mile.
2. Section 179 limits adjusted. Equipment purchases just got more attractive.
3. Retirement contribution limits increased. Max out if you can.

The difference between a good tax year and a bad one? Knowing what changed.

Your receipts are trying to tell you something.

Every receipt in your inbox, every coffee meeting, every software subscription β€” it's not just noise. It's data about where your business is going.

When you look at your expenses as a story instead of a chore, something shifts:

β€’ That $50/month tool you forgot about? Dead weight. Cancel it.
β€’ That client lunch every Tuesday? Relationship investment. Track it.
β€’ That home office setup? Deduction. Claim it.

Your financial data is a compass. Most people just never stop to read it.
