Can't I wait on regular service? It plays fine.
This is a rationale I hear often, and I get it. Repairs can be expensive and with the way prices and the cost of living are, something has to give. So you do what you need to do.
However, the more precise your instrument is, the more you should try to stick to a regular maintenance schedule as recommended by your technician. The tightness of the mechanisms and the precision of the fit in the keys is crucial to your instrument playing better for longer. It is what makes padding of the highest degree of accuracy and repeatability possible. Not getting regular service threatens all of this. Here's how:
Lubricants perform 3 functions in a woodwind mechanism. Lubrication, protecting the steel from rust, and keeping dirt and debris from getting in to the mechanism.
Lubricants are not permanent. Over time (whether payed or not) two things can happen. The lubricant can oxidize and turn from an oil consistency to more of a grease, and then into sludge. This can obviously make the key action feel like there's...well... sludge in it, but also the thicker the oil congeals the less capable it is to cover the entire surface. This leave the steel vulnerable to rust forming, and if dirt or debris (dust) manages to gain entrance into the mechanisms, it can get stuck in the sludge. This is a problem.
The other condition is the oil evaporates or goes fugitive (runs out). This leaves the steel unprotected. Rust can form, dust and dirt can get in, and pose a real danger to the precision mechanism.
When the oil gets sludgy it is usually obvious cuz things don't work as well. When the mechanisms go dry it can be obvious in that the key action sounds louder. The oil provides a bit of a cushion between the metal parts. Many players recognize either condition and add some oil themselves.
***If you feel the necessity to add oil yourself, the instrument needs attention from a tech.***. Either it has been too long or there is an issue with the previous oil used.
In both situations, there is a high likelihood of dust, dirt, & debris inside the mechanism. If you add oil, you have just added cutting fluid. If the unprotected steel has begun to rust, adding oil may dislodge iron oxide particles which are a very effective abrasive.
The more precise the mechanisms are in your instrument, the higher the hazard. The greater the hazard, the higher the potential cost to repair.
In the past few weks I have seen 4 instruments with such issues. All of them had been multiple years since their last thorough service. All of them were in for a Clean/Oil/Adjust service which cleans and oils the mechanisms, and all of them had serious issues with key action due to microscopic grooves and scratches carved into both the outside of the steel and the inside of the hinge tube.
All of these instruments required an addition amount of time to fix the key function issues that was 75% or more the amount of time on the whole COA process. When you have a nice instrument, this is not a flippant concern.
Hand made and professional instruments are obvious, but manufacturing processes have improved in such a way that "step-down", pre-professional, and intermediate level instruments can see the same sort of damage occur due to lack of regular service.
Regular maintanance is necessary to prevent damage to your instrument's highly precise features. While annual service is a good idea, you may not need that, or you may need it more frequently. Work with your technician to determine what is a good plan for your needs to keep your instrument healthy.
