Potomac engineers Saniya and Zac had an incredible time at the Kenmore Middle School STEM Fair, sharing our cutting-edge micro parts that play a pivotal role in curing diseases, launching rockets into space, and guiding self-driving cars.

The enthusiasm and curiosity from the students were contagious. Both Saniya and Zac noted how many budding engineers are already thinking big and dreaming boldly! The future is bright, and we’re excited to say recruitment starts now! 😄

For years, scientists have been working to reduce animal testing and speed up clinical trials using in vitro assays, but these have limitations. To address this, researchers are developing “Organ-on-a-chip” devices that mimic tissue and organ functions. A team in Barcelona has created a device that simulates the human blood-retinal barrier. This work involves scientists from various institutes including the IMB-CNM, CSIC, CIBER-BBN, VHIR, and UAB. Their study, featured in Lab-on-a-Chip journal, shows a “proof of concept” for the device, which uses parallel compartments to culture different types of cells, allowing for realistic cellular communication and interaction. This innovation closely replicates in vivo conditions, enhancing in vitro experimentation. It has been tested for barrier formation, permeability, and electrical resistance, making it a promising tool for studying retinal diseases like diabetic retinopathy.
