Not all conifers stay green year-round. Some of the most striking put on a golden show each fall before quietly dropping their needles, and they're worth planting for that moment alone.

Our deciduous conifers include larches, dawn redwoods, golden larch, and bald cypress. In autumn, their soft, feathery foliage turns rich shades of gold, amber, and burnt orange. The color glows brilliantly against dark evergreens. And when the needles finally fall, what's left behind is just as interesting: sculptural branching, layered silhouettes, and textured bark that carry the garden through winter.

Three reasons to give them a spot in your landscape:
🍂 Stunning fall color that rivals any deciduous tree
🍂 Soft, feathery needles that bring texture and movement unlike any other conifer
🍂 Year-round interest from spring's bright green emergence to winter's elegant bare branching

Monty® Blue Spruce

A cross between a male ‘Montgomery’ and a female ‘Hoopsii’, this bold new Iseli® introduction unites its parents’ best characteristics. Monty® has a classic Christmas tree form, and its long, thin needles are bluer than blue. Its compact size, full, well-branched habit, and shimmering foliage make this dwarf blue spruce a versatile specimen tree perfect for today’s smaller landscapes.

At Iseli Nursery, we say "12 Months of Color" because the right plants deliver something worth seeing in every season. Conifers are the backbone of that idea, bringing structure and interest to the garden all year long.

Fat Cat Norway Spruce

Picea abies ‘Fat Cat’ has very short, stiff needles and short shoots that give it the appearance of a rotund, green cat, curled up in a ball for a snooze. Iseli Nursery acquired the plant, a witch’s broom from Picea abies ‘Graciosa’, in 1994 and officially named it for a tubby, slumbering feline. Extremely hardy, reliable and slow-growing, this kitty creates a presence in the landscape, but don’t try to pet its “fur”.

Golden Globe Arborvitae

True to its name, Thuja occidentalis ‘Golden Globe’ has soft, colorful foliage and a uniform, rounded form. It works well in landscapes that call for intermediate size, reliable form and contrasting color. Hardy, durable and adaptable to many conditions, you may choose to shear Golden Globe just to enjoy its delightfully sweet aroma. For best color, grow in full sun.

Weeping Canadian Hemlock

Tsuga canadensis ‘Pendula’ is perhaps the most widely known and used form of Canadian Hemlock—especially when it is staked and trained to develop height and character. Pendulous branches form a thick exterior “shell” of foliage that covers the plant’s interior structural scaffold. Very useful and beautiful throughout the garden from sprawling ground covers or unique sculptural qualities to providing shade and softness to the garden gazebo.

Spiralis Hinoki Cypress (Planted 1986)

Few trees can claim the dramatic architectural quality of the incredible Chamaecyparis obtusa ‘Spiralis’. A striking narrow habit and attractive bark contribute to the beauty of each specimen. But it is the very dense, finely textured foliage naturally sculpted on spiraling branches that account for the awe factor. Slow growing and ideal for large courtyard containers, this choice selection has a delicate constitution that requires perfect conditions. Grow in moist, well-drained soil in full sun or light shade.

Iseli Nursery, through extensive trials over more than two decades, studied Pinus heldreichii seedlings. Selections were made for uniquely desirable conformation, color, and other characteristics. The resulting collection of dwarf and slow-growing Pinus heldreichii cultivars offers distinct improvements over widely-used, established pine varieties, giving garden centers and landscapers choice options for adding year-round beauty to intimate outdoor living spaces. In fact, these cultivars are so healthy and reliable that they practically grow themselves.

During the selection process, superior seedlings were chosen for well-proportioned size and form, including distinctly narrow spires or fastigiated columns, particularly striking bun or pyramid shapes, and the best traditional, “pine tree” form. But, better form was not the only criteria used for identifying superior trees. All selections also displayed cold hardiness to USDA Zone 5 and possessed upright needles and excellent health, including resistance to insect and disease problems. The resulting collection of superior dwarf and slow-growing Bosnian pine cultivars, which perform best when grown in full sun and well drained soil, is now available for discerning gardeners.
