Metropolitan Nashville Police Department Officers Rex Engelbert, a 4-year veteran, and Michael Collazo, a 9-year veteran, were part of a team of first responders to the Covenant campus Monday morning. They fired on the active shooter and neutralized the threat permanently.
Uvalde Police Departmentneed to learn from these actions taken by these officers. Instead of waiting OUTSIDE while the killer was inside, these officers RUSHED inside Covenant Classical School without hesitation and neutralized the threat permanently within 15 minutes.
The massacre that occurred at Robb Elementary School on Tuesday, May 24, 2022, occurred when a perpetrator entered the school and fatally shot nineteen students and two teachers, while seventeen others were injured but survived. The outcome would have been different if Uvalde Police officers had acted immediately and went towards the threat. Instead, they waited!
At Robb Elementary, the killer entered the school at 11:27 AM and the police breached a door using keys provided by janitor at 12:50 PM. Do the math! 😡 just about 50 minutes went by before the threat was neutralized! So many failures!
It was an off duty US Border Patrol Del Rio Sector ( ) agent with other agents, using a ballistic shield, entered the classroom and shot and killed the gunman after a phalanx of officers had waited outside for nearly 77 minutes while children repeatedly called 911, pleading for help. This agent did not wait for backup as he rushed into the school and shot, killed the assailant, who was behind a barricade. The agent was wounded but able to walk out of the school.
It takes an average two to four minutes after a shooting has begun, before someone calls 911. Usually, the caller is already under attack or has only heard gunshots and can only provide little information about the active scene. It also takes time for authorities to get to the incident site. All the while, they have very few details about what exactly is happening inside and where.
Nationwide, statistics indicate that it takes an average of 14-17 minutes before law enforcement responds to the call for assistance, with the average incident ending in under seven (7) minutes. With those response times in mind, the focus must shift to understanding who the “true” first responders are, because they are clearly the people within the event as it is unfolding.
How do law enforcement agencies the shooter's timeline and close the gap of killings within the first 5 minutes of attack? Here’s how, police officers MUST breach the structure and enter. They don’t need to wait for backup, they go inside and find the perpetrator(s) and quickly the threat, especially if it’s a school environment filled with kids.
