Growing up, in high school and throughout my college years I was told that we would be the leaders in the workforce, that we would be successful if we just worked hard and put our best foot forward. When I graduated college I received a rude awakening. I didn’t get a management role, I didn’t get a juicy salary; it was very difficult to even find a job. Quite literally I was starting out at the bottom of a medium sized business. I was blessed to be taught a strong work ethic as a young man and I had a talent for the work I was doing. I never realized that my ability to get to the 'next level' was not based on my work ethic or raw talent alone. After being passed up on a promotion by someone who did not perform at nearly the same level of me, I began to think about why. I asked questions, looked for feedback, and I looked at the behavior of the most successful leaders in the organization I was working for. I found that raw talent and work ethic are helpful but the greatest delineation was the intangibles; the way they talked to people, remembered names, understood the people working for them. It came down to their leadership ability, ability to bring people together, which were all encompassed by mastering their emotions. This discovery opened my eyes and turned into my passion. I have made it a personal mission to help others learn how to master these same intangibles, and so I created Arks Professional and Team Development to do just that.
