What's a domestic backflow, and why does the city care if it's working?

If your building is on city water, you have one.
A backflow is the assembly that protects the public drinking water supply from contamination flowing back out of your building.
If pressure drops in the city line, water inside your building can siphon backward into the public supply.
The backflow stops that from happening.

Ever wonder why your sprinkler system has to be inspected every three months?

Short answer: the State of Maine.
Sprinkler inspections are governed by NFPA 25. The Maine State Fire Marshal's Office has adopted it as the standard for every building in the state.
Here's what it requires:
- Quarterly inspections for the basics
- Three-year and five-year testing on specific components
- Sprinkler head testing on cycles from 10 to 50 years

Why quarterly?
Because a sprinkler system can quietly stop working between visits.
Four checks a year is what catches it.

Ever wonder what we're actually doing during your quarterly sprinkler inspection?

Many building owners have never seen one happen.
Here's the visit, start to finish:
- We silence the interior alarms so nothing disrupts the building
- We trip the flow alarms and confirm the strobes and horns activate
- We check valves, gauges, and overall condition
- We restore the system and write up the report

When we're done, you get a full inspection report in your BuildingReports portal.
Every item is tagged red, yellow, or green so you know exactly what needs attention and what's good to go.

Inspector notes and recommendations are right there with it.
That's the document you hand to the State Fire Marshal.

That's the document your insurance carrier asks for.
