Ingram Maintenance & Welding

Ingram Maintenance & Welding Servicing, rebuilding and RESTORING antique, unique and obsolete magnetos and carburetors. in our units for two (2) full years.

Ingram Maintenance & Welding was established with one goal in mind: "Doing it right, the first time"

We take the extra step, spend the extra few minutes to inspect, evaluate and totally repair your magneto so we can guarantee the major components (bearings, bushings, seals, etc.) YOU are responsible for points air gap adjustment, condensor replacement and using/replacing the correct copper core s

park plug wires as/if needed. We support our local AG classes and repair centers. On occasion, (once a year) we pick a deserving student through and with the help of their instructor, and restore a magneto for the student for free. It’s our way and paying it forward as well as setting a positive example. We feel we owe the next generation a bit of a hand up. (If you’re a grownup, we simply can’t work for free. You’ll get free advise to a point but when you need an overhaul and are asked to ship your magneto to us, that’s as far as we can go without laying hands on your unit.) Our local repair centers supply our restorations to their customers, as well. Their clients appreciate the OEM-NOS parts we use in our shop. Magnetos need occasional full service to re-magnetize the rotor and to track down and repair weak or worn parts. Smart people choose Ingram Maintenance & Welding for their magneto repairs. In our Carburetor Shop, we rebuild Marvel Shebler, Zenith, Linkert and various other vintage and antique carburetors. They are torn down, soaked in the carb tank and scrubbed to ensure that all the ports are clean and then we "size" the ports and passages to make sure there were no mistakes made in the manufacturing process. The same goes for the jets, they are inspected, cleaned and sized. We have the capability of re-bushing throttle and choke shafts to stop them from sucking air, making your carburetor fully adjustable again.

When I was younger, much younger, I worked at Son’s Harley-Davidson in the Parts Department in Akron, Ohio. It was my second ever job.
The owner had a sign in his office that read: “The difference between men and boys is the price of their toys”.

That still rings true, today.

A fellow bought a brand new WICO XH894 magneto for his 4 cylinder tractor.
Before he put it on, he took the cap and rotor off just to look at the workings. When he put them back on, he didn’t time the rotor and couldn’t figure out why his new magneto wasn’t starting and running his engine.

Here’s a picture of his rotor and where his spark was going.

Magneto coils don’t care where the spark goes…but it’s going!
See the faint yellow circle I added? In the center you’ll see a black dot. THAT’S where the spark was going. It blasted a hole through the rotor and was shorting to ground because that was the path of least resistance. Total travel distance is about 3/4”

We’re getting ready to go to the Findlay Military Vehicle Show this Saturday.

https://www.findlaymilitaryshow.org/

We’re taking restored MULE magneto assemblies with us and will be bringing tired, dead units back home for restoration.

If YOU have a dead or dying MULE magneto and need it gone through, stem to stern and are attending the Findlay show, we will be there Saturday only. Bring it and hand it off to us.

We have the Mil. spec. parts for these. We’re a single source shop because we stock the parts. Bearings, seals, points, condensors, coils…all OEM. No imports.

(If your magneto case or cap are butchered, battered or broken, we TIG weld.)

Let’s talk about magneto magnetism, because the more you know.

The magnetic rotor is the heart of your magneto. With a strong and fully charged magnet, you’ll have crisp, blue/white spark that’ll jump an open air gap of 11mm (7/16”)
With a weak and old magnet, you’ll have yellow spark that occasionally misfires.
Fairbanks Morse Service literature calls out “Re-magnetize every 8 years for optimal performance.” You can probably squeak by longer but don’t be surprised when your magneto lays down on you. (because it will)
So, it’s agreed that your magnetic rotor needs to be recharged, right?

There is no way to recharge your rotor while it still in the housing.
No way.
You can take it out (provided you have the special tooling) and take it to your local magneto repair center to have them recharge it and then reinstall/reassemble your magneto OR, you can have your local magneto repair center do it, start to finish.

They have the hand tools. (Special)
They have the shop equipment. (Special)
They have the service literature, experience and knowledge…and have that reference material to fall back to if they need to regroup.
They have the parts. (Special)

We recharge magnets for $10.00 IF you carry it in.
We recharge magnets for $150.00 IF we take your magneto apart, plus parts and shipping.

We also understand the importance of microfarad balance and what happens when there’s an imbalance.
The adage, “Any condensor is better than no condensor” will eat your magneto points ALIVE. Will your points last 10 minutes or 10 days?
…it’s anyone’s guess.

Don’t go to the butcher shop if you need open heart surgery because you’ll only get a hotdog.

Mule condensors are falling from the sky! (via airmail). The condensors we chased down last week and ordered are starting to arrive.

There are people trying to use “other” condensors that don’t match the microfarads required of this assembly.
Those people will experience sudden and complete failure when they least expect it.
Fording a creek?
In a parade?
2 miles from the house while working their fence line?
The only part of this equation not predictable is the “WHEN” part.

When we say we use OEM-NOS parts in our restorations, we s**t you NOT.

When you contact us privately asking magneto repair advice, we give it to you.
If you can’t do the work, that’s on you.
It’s time to box it up and send it to us.

Quality isn’t expensive,
It’s PRICELESS!

M274 “Mule” magnetos have a unique (and obsolete) condensor in them. We’ve taken it upon ourselves to help alleviate this problem.
We’re sourcing and procuring surplus condensors from all over the country and world. The word is out and multiple supply houses have called us with, “I know where there’s 3” and “I have 7”. They’re all in the mail, coming to us. Be aware though, once this supply is exhausted, that’s the end as we know it.

We’ve also modified and fitted a condensor not originally intended for the Mule and it fits in the original location, works perfectly and there’s NO cosmetic or structural damage to the cap. No extra holes drilled, no Cousin Eddie repairs. No cobbles.

If you have a Mule magneto with a dead condensor, box it up and ship it to us. We will restore your magneto, install our replacement condensor and return it ready for you to bolt back on.

We also have new cap screw seals, Packard seals and cork Packard washers to put your magneto back to 100% Mil. spec. in the condensor department.

We have several (3) “Mule” magnetos in from various locations around the country, with several (4) more in transit, incoming.
These magnetos are about as unique as you’ll find, short of aviation magnetos.
Special condensors, remote venting, lead and o-ring cap gaskets and more.
Upon complete disassembly, we scrub and inspect for obvious defects as well as looking for anything that might produce future problems.

If you own a Mule and need magneto work done, we have you covered…give us a call or text.
