We can't emphasize this enough: please do not do any outdoor burning Friday. The fire danger is critical to extreme for North Texas. Very strong winds, dry vegetation, and low humidity will lead to any fires getting out of control very fast.

Alert: Extreme Wildfire Danger Today (March 4).

Extreme fire weather conditions are expected to be widespread in West and South Texas near Abilene, Austin, Del Rio, Fort Worth, Killeen, Laredo, San Angelo, San Antonio, Stephenville, and Weatherford.

High winds, greater than 30 mph, and low humidity will align with dry vegetation across the area and may result in large wildfires that are difficult to control. Evacuations may be necessary under these conditions.

A Southern Plains Wildfire Outbreak may develop under these conditions. Any wildfire that ignites in dry vegetation could have forward rates of spread up to six miles per hour.

Stay WILDFIRE ALERT today! If a wildfire is spotted, immediately contact local authorities. A quick response can help save lives and property.

Do we need to panic? No. That's never reasonable. Should you stay informed on the changes coming next week? Absolutely. It is WAY too early to discuss accumulation, but the chances for wintry precip Thursday & Friday have gone up a bit. Changes WILL come to this map.
