What have I been up to this summer??
Well, aside from getting soil moisture probes in (and staying working 😅), it’s been business as usual with keeping tabs on crop growth and continuing to dive into regenerative ag practices & learning more about what is going on with plants as the year progresses.

I’ve been taking Brix samples on crops—tracking those sugars in plants to give myself & growers insight into early season plant health.
Soil health sampling has been a top priority on a handful of fields as well so we can better track nutrients & make better decisions with all of our inputs—water and nutrients. We can’t be losing money on needless nutrient apps or overapplying water, leaching nutrients such as nitrogen.

It’s been a GREAT couple of days learning about soil health & biology with some cover crop eduction with Grren Cover Seed and their amazing guest speaker, Nicole Masters (a gal I’ve been following a couple years and was totally fan-girling).

A good chunk was review but a BIG chunk was new to me and I’m excited to bring some insights back to my area and help you incorporate into your operation; row crop or rangeland.

Let me know what issues you’re struggling with, especially with input decisions; there’s probably a better way than adding more fertilizer or water to reach your goals. 😉

Did you know....

Your total corn yield potential is determined from days 9-12 of your corn plant's life....??

What does your new corn plant go thru in the first 9-12 days of its life in your operation on your fields?
Soil and air temps? Total sunlight and heat? Adequate soil moisture conditions to allow for maximum plant to soil biology communication? Any leftover herbicides hanging out from the previous yet? How have your tillage choices set up a successful crop thru the whole growing season?
....just a few things to think about for those first 9-12 days. 😉

We're just regular ole worm farmers over here. 😜
I've teamed up with a grower to dabble in growing our own soil biology for soil(and maybe seed) inoculation using compost, more specifically the Johnson-Su compost extraction method compost.
With today's input costs and the need to continue to improve efficiencies, thinking forward, outside the box and doing collaborations will be KEY to grower & producer success.
This is a picture of the earth worms added to the compost mix roughly a month ago.

Late fall cover crop mix growing and thriving!
These beauties provided carbon to soil biology allllll fall and could very well STILL be providing carbon even though we've had cold & negative temps--brassicas can survive pretty cold temps and even overwinter if conditions allow.
