"Can't you just zoom in?"
It's one of the most common questions investigators hear.
Television shows have convinced many people that every blurry security camera can be magically enhanced until a license plate, face, or tattoo becomes crystal clear. In reality, that's rarely how video evidence works.
The truth is, successful investigations rarely depend on a single photograph or video.
Professional investigators examine the entire picture:
✔ Multiple surveillance cameras from different locations
✔ Vehicle make, model, year, color, and unique features
✔ Travel direction and timeline
✔ Clothing, gait, and physical characteristics
✔ Witness statements
✔ Social media and public records
✔ Digital evidence and investigative databases
✔ Patterns of behavior and other corroborating evidence
Often, it's the combination of dozens of small details that identifies a person—not one perfectly clear image.
Another important point: when photos or videos are immediately shared across social media, it can unintentionally alert the person involved, influence witness recollections, or complicate an ongoing investigation.
If you're the victim of a crime or need help identifying someone, preserve the original evidence and consult a professional investigator as early as possible. A strategic investigation is often far more effective than a viral Facebook post.
At Hog Hollow Investigations, we know what to look for—and how to put the pieces together.
