Your refrigerator may seem to be running well, but when is the last time that it was properly maintenanced? The truth of the matter is that an unmaintenanced refrigerator causes longer run times and premature failure of the refrigerator altogether. Typically, a refrigerator does not go from running properly, to not running at all. Instead, there is usually a slow accumulation of dust and pet hair, that only becomes obvious when the refrigerator or freezer finally quits.

1)Cleaning the condenser coils on your refrigerator should be part of your routine maintenance. Cleaning or having the coils on your refrigerator properly cleaned, including the back cover with the vents , the fan, and all surrounding areas including the area behind the refrigerator, (as any debris left there will end right back in the vent and coils) will save hundreds of dollars on your electric bill, over the lifetime of your refrigerator as it runs more efficiently. Compressor run time is greatly reduced whenever the coils and surrounding areas are kept properly clean.

2)When servicing coils this is also a great opportunity to inspect the defrost drains. Defrost drains are another common problem, that almost every refrigerator encounters at some point. Clogged drains will prevent the condensate (formed when the frost melts off of the cooling coils during the defrost cycle) from draining into the defrost pan located below the refrigerator and can turn into an expensive service call if not properly maintained. The undrained water will pool up in the bottom of your freezer, often accumulating until it begins to drain onto the kitchen floor. This undrained condensate will also rest underneath the coils behind the back wall, where you cannot see. When the refrigerator goes back into cooling mode and the fan comes on , it will recirculate the the undrained condensate in the form of moist air. This moist air, over time, will accumulate on the evaporator and build up often near the fan. Eventually the moisture in the air freezes and the newly formed ice restricts the fans movement or just blocks air flow through the coils, thus greatly reducing cooling capacity.

Standard service call for the cleaning of the coils, the adjacent cabinet, the area behind the refrigerator and the defrost drains, would average between 165.00 and 225.00.

A customer wrapped/insulated his refrigerant return line to try and eliminate some of the condensation. To fortify the integrity of the seal he put a zip tie about every inch or two. This method adds " intestinal fortitude" to the insulatation job. I had trouble processing it, lol, it's a great job but it just made me uncomfortable!!!😂😂🤣🤣
