Decision-making, conflict management and time management are all shaped and influenced by our personalities. So when we say “O that’s just a personality issue”, and move on like that will somehow resolve itself because we said that, we’ve already lost. We have to know how to do something with that.

Personalities influence communication habits, how individuals talk, listen, and learn. They affect decision making, and how people make judgments. They also affect listening preferences, attention to details, and how we manage conflict and disagreements. In fact, most disagreements often stem from differing personality styles rather than the actual issues being discussed.

Personalities impact everything we do and everything we say. And oftentimes we hear some myths about personalities. When people say they just have a personality clash, we downplay it as though everyone knows it's just a personality difference. And we don't address it. We then say things like, 'They just need to get along. It's just a personality difference. They just need to figure it out.' But that is the problem. And so what we tend to do is we tend to downplay personality differences and then we look for other solutions. Let's go ahead and try to figure out how to resolve that problem or let's try to figure out how to communicate better or how to have conflict management better. But the problem is that decision making, conflict management, time management, problem resolution skills are shaped by personality. So when we say that's just a personality difference and put it off to the side and then we say let's go solve it with something else, we don't realize that really it's just personalities.

Anytime you walk into a room and have a crowd of five people, you have to assume two of those people already disagree with you just by how you walked in. This is true because the way that we carry our personality, our body language, our tone, our approach is not going to match the personality and the tone and the approach of others in the room. So we have to learn first of all that difference does exist. That difference is real. Those that are high-level thinkers and those that are detail thinkers bring a lot of value to decision-making. The problem is that we all have a hard time figuring out how it is that the other person brings value when I just disagree so much with their approach.

Great management is not about having high standards. It is about communicating them consistently. If you have them written down somewhere but no one knows where and they are different from what employees think, your employees will not perform well. Make sure they are abiding at the same standards, procedures and processes.

True performance happens when everyone follows the standards and procedures you have established. First, agree on the procedures. Then execute. When everyone executes doing it their own way, creates confusion, delays, short term fixes, but long term problems. Focus on establishing procedures, processes and adhering to them.
