Yesterday, the St. George Fire Department officially unveiled our new Wildland Firefighting Program—a major investment in firefighter safety, wildfire preparedness, and community protection.

This program is about more than new trucks and equipment. It’s about the 33 highly trained firefighters who have dedicated themselves to becoming specialists in wildland firefighting through rigorous training, live burn exercises, physical fitness standards, and advanced certifications.

With growing wildland-urban interface risks throughout our district, this team strengthens our ability to protect lives, homes, and property while supporting neighboring communities when called upon.

A special thank you to State Senator Rick Edmonds for his support in securing state funding that helped make the purchase of our new wildland apparatus possible. Investments like these directly enhance our ability to serve and protect our community for years to come.

This is more than a team. It’s a commitment to readiness, excellence, and the safety of the communities we serve.
And finally, thank you to every single person who came out yesterday to celebrate this milestone with us and check out the new trucks, equipment, and gear. The support shown by our community, elected officials, partner agencies, family members, and friends meant more than we can adequately express. We are incredibly grateful for your continued trust and support as we work every day to keep our community safe.

We have been hard at work on a project in the community. We are so proud to be an instrumental part of the official home of the The Safety Place - Safety & Injury Prevention at BREC's Cedar Ridge Avenue Park. Our Director of Community Relations happens to also be the CEO of the Safety Place, bringing these organizations together for the sake of our wonderful community. We can't wait to show you what else we will be bringing to the table of St. George!

Today, we pause to remember the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country.

Beyond the barbecues, gatherings, and long weekend, Memorial Day is a time to reflect on the courage, sacrifice, and dedication of those who made the ultimate sacrifice to protect the freedoms we enjoy every day.

At the St. George Fire Department, we honor and remember all who served and especially those who never made it home. Their legacy lives on through the communities they protected and the lives they touched.

From all of us at SGFD, we thank our fallen heroes and their families today and every day. 🇺🇸

St. George Fire Department units responded to the 2800 block of Grandway Avenue for a reported structure fire at 11:58 a.m. on May 23, 2026. Upon arrival, Engine 653 and Squad 655 found smoke showing from a single-story residence. Crews immediately deployed hoselines for fire attack and made entry into the structure. The homeowners had self-evacuated and were uninjured. Firefighters brought the fire under control within 20 minutes of arrival due to rapid fire attack tactics. While the home was not considered a total loss, there was enough damage to displace two adults and one dog. There were no injuries reported. The fire was determined to have been caused by a lightning strike.

Thank you to Baton Rouge Fire Department, East Baton Rouge Parish Emergency Medical Services, and East Baton Rouge Sheriffs Office for support on scene.

Assigned units: Engine 653, Squad 655, Engine 613, Ladder 618, Medic Unit 687, Shift Safety Officer 91, Battalion Chiefs 82 & 6, BRFD Engine 10 & District Chief 37.

As always, we encourage our community to double and triple check your smoke alarms. Smoke alarms are good for 10 years; if they are older than 10 years, it's time to change them out. If your smoke alarms are chirping, they are dying and it's time for new batteries or new devices. If you need assistance, give us a call!
