"The Thrive Grant places a special emphasis on small businesses making a significant impact in underrepresented communities or communities of color. We understand the vital role these enterprises play, from creating new jobs to developing innovative products, increasing tax revenue, and enhancing accessibility to goods and services. This is why we’re offering a $5,000 grant every quarter to help these businesses continue their remarkable work.

Eligibility:
- Your business must have a measurable and positive impact on its community, such as creating new jobs, developing innovative products, services, or solutions, or improving accessibility to essential products, services or resources
- Businesses operating for at least 1 year will be prioritized; Businesses less than one year old are still eligible but must provide evidence of significant community impact or potential
- Your business must be generating revenue (Preference will be given to businesses with a minimum annual revenue of $35,000)
- Priority will be given to businesses that directly benefit or operate within underrepresented or underserved communities, including women- and minority-owned businesses
- The business must be formed under United States law and operating within the United States"

Houston Broadcasting Legend Melanie Lawson Makes Generous Donation to NABJ Chapters!

​HOUSTON - Houston's own Melanie Lawson is giving back in a big way, announcing a donation of $86,000 to journalism scholarship funds. The donation is split equally between the Houston Association of Black Journalists (HABJ) and the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ), with each organization receiving $43,000.

​The generous amount reflects Lawson's impressive 43-year career as a journalist at KTRK-TV in Houston, where she became a beloved and respected figure in the community. Lawson contributed $1,000 for each year she served, demonstrating her deep commitment to nurturing future generations of journalists.

​The first half of the donation, $43,000, went directly to her home chapter, HABJ, to support students pursuing careers in journalism within the Houston area. The second half, $43,000, was gifted to the national chapter, NABJ, providing similar opportunities for students nationwide.

​Lawson made the significant announcement via zoom during the Houston Convention kickoff for the 2027 NABJ Conference, which is scheduled to be held in Houston next year. This timing highlights her continued dedication to the organization and the city she has served for decades.
