Why Communication is One of the Biggest Problems in the Workplace

We often don't realize that poor communication is at the root of many workplace issues. Instead of identifying communication breakdowns, we villainize the other person, assuming they're the problem. But in reality, emotions are driving the disconnect.

We get frustrated, angry, or hurt without recognizing our own emotions or understanding how to read the emotions of others. When we’re unclear or misinterpret what’s being said, things get messy fast. The result? Drama, conflict, and resentment could all be avoided if we communicated better.

Building awareness around how we communicate—and how emotions impact those conversations—is key to solving this. We don’t have to be perfect, but we do have to be intentional.

Video 5 with Dr. Sharla Paso! 🧠 How do you manage employees with mental health struggles? It’s really no different from managing someone with a physical injury.

If someone has a broken leg, you’d offer accommodations—maybe lighter duties or a change in their role. The same applies to mental health. The key is having an open conversation with your employee:

What do they need?

What are they doing to help themselves? (Counseling, medication, de-stressing?)

Once you understand their situation, you work together to agree on the right accommodations. Then, just like with any other condition, you trust them to do their best with those adjustments.

Is in-person or virtual training better? 🤔

While we’ve made strides in making our virtual sessions as interactive as possible, nothing truly beats the in-person experience.

In-person training creates deeper connections, making it easier to engage with others and interact in real time. The energy in the room, the spontaneous discussions, and the ability to read body language all contribute to a better learning environment.

We understand that virtual or remote options are valuable for many. They provide flexibility and accessibility, so we continue offering them. But when it comes to interaction and connection, in-person training remains unmatched!

Should you ever force your employees to attend communication or leadership training? The answer is no. ❌

They won't learn much if you force them to attend against their will. Instead, it’s important to articulate their weaknesses or areas for improvement and openly discuss these points. When employees recognize where they need to grow, they may ask for help or training.

The key is to understand individually that they’re not meeting expectations, whether in leadership or communication. Once they see the value in improving, you can introduce training as a supportive resource to help them improve.

What’s been the hardest part about teaching communication skills? 🤔

Feeling like a hypocrite: I struggle with communication myself at times, which can make it feel a bit ironic to teach others.

Making the content relevant – Every student is different, with their own challenges and styles. Figuring out how to connect the material with each individual while teaching a group is always a balancing act.

But these challenges are also what makes it so rewarding. Seeing those "aha" moments and watching people grow as leaders keeps me going. 💪

Is there public speaking in our Communication in Leadership course? Well, sort of—but it’s probably not what you’re thinking.

It’s not about standing up and delivering a big speech to everyone. Instead, it’s more about discussing and practicing communication techniques with partners and small groups.

We focus on real, practical situations where you must communicate clearly and confidently. And yes, you have to practice to get better! It’s through these smaller, focused conversations that you’ll really build your skills.

Why is our Communication in Leadership training 16 weeks long, just 2 hours per week? 🤔

Because real growth takes time.

Here's why spreading training over 16 weeks works better than a quick, one-off session:

Deeper learning – Small, consistent doses allow for better absorption and understanding of the material.

Practice in real time—You can take what you learn each week and apply it immediately to your work, then come back with questions and insights.

Sustainable change – True leadership and communication skills take practice. Stretching the training over time helps these skills become habits, not just ideas.

Ongoing support – With weekly sessions, you get continuous guidance and feedback, which leads to greater progress.

In short, this approach builds long-term, meaningful change that sticks.

Is it possible to get rid of our ego? Not really. 🤷‍♂️

Our ego is always there—it’s part of being human. But it can be controlled if we learn to avoid letting it control us.

The ego wants to be right, win, and protect itself. It can stop us from listening, make us defensive, and turn conversations into battles. But when we’re aware of it, we can master it. Here are a few tips:

Pause before reacting – Give yourself a moment to reflect before responding, especially in heated situations.

Ask questions— Instead of trying to prove yourself right, ask questions to understand the other person’s perspective.

Admit when you're wrong – Acknowledge mistakes openly. It shows strength, not weakness.

Focus on the bigger picture – Shift from "winning" the argument to finding a solution that benefits everyone.

Practice gratitude – Gratitude can help reduce the ego’s need for constant validation.

Mastering your ego leads to better communication and stronger relationships. Try it next time you feel it creeping up!
