Hitting the becket (wedge socket) too hard could cause it to crack. If it cracks it’s going to fail eventually (hopefully close to the ground). This is all completely avoidable. To break the wedge free, use a punch. Hit the wedge directly, avoid striking the socket and/or wire rope.

OSHA and ASME do not explicitly prohibit hitting a wedge socket with a hammer, they do however emphasize adherence to manufacturer instructions. Light tapping to seat the wedge may be permissible if needed during assembly if allowed by the manufacturer, but excessive or improper striking could damage the socket, wedge, or wire rope, requiring removal from service.

Always inspect components after striking, use appropriate tools, and follow manufacturer guidelines to ensure compliance with OSHA 29 CFR 1910.184/1926.251 and ASME B30.9/B30.26. For specific guidance, refer to the manufacturer’s instructions or consult resources like OSHA’s website (https://www.osha.gov) or ASME’s B30 standards.

Regular crane inspections save lives by ensuring safety and preventing accidents. They also provide solid legal ground if something goes wrong. Prioritize safety, protect your team, and stay compliant!

If anyone has an interest in becoming an inspector and is free this Monday, you're welcome to join me and see how an inspection goes. You'll see a 40-ton, non-destructive load test. You'll get to see how inspection software gets used, see what happens if there are any discrepancies, attach photos of items, write notes, and attach related OSHA/ASME regulations to each line item that needs to be addressed. The jobsite is about 4 hours south of Portland. We'll leave Monday morning from Portland and be back later that evening.
