Can a paper mill save approximately USD 1M? Yes, they did with Mobil™ Solvancer®!

A large paper packaging company in South Carolina observed degraded oil and increased signs of oxidation and varnish in their paper machine oil system. The mill approached the Mobil™ engineering team requesting support to maximize oil life, minimize downtime and ensure asset availability.

The Mobil™ team conducted a Maximum Service oil analysis test to determine varnish and oxidation severity. Mobil™ engineers prescribed a 5% treat rate of Mobil™ Solvancer® oil-soluble cleaner to remove varnish from the system during operation.

Following 4+ weeks of circulation, an oil change out to Mobil DTE™ PM 220 paper machine oil was completed.

The oil change in conjunction with Mobil™ Solvancer’s® exceptional ability to remove varnish, carbon and sludge from circulating lubrication systems provided a clean system with a data-driven approach.

Lubricant Varnish: What We’ve Learned and What We Still Don’t Know!

Twenty-five years ago, the industry had no consistent way to measure a turbine oil’s tendency to form varnish, deposit-control chemistry was poorly understood, and mitigation options were limited and largely unproven.

We also did not fully appreciate the many pathways that lead to varnish, or why deposits build rapidly in some parts of a system while leaving others clean. A lot has changed since then.

Better test methods, more robust formulations, and field-proven removal technologies have significantly improved how we prevent, detect, and manage varnish in critical equipment. Important unknowns remain.

This presentation summarizes the advances that have shaped today’s best practices, challenges misconceptions that still drive the wrong maintenance decisions, and highlights the key open questions that must be addressed to move closer to truly deposit-free operation in rotating equipment.

Nuclear power generation can become tricky very quickly!

Find out how we were able to extend the life of the oil in a GE TC-4F-30 power turbine with a 650MW capacity in a large nuclear power generation complex through the use of Mobil™ Solvancer®.

The turbine l**e system had been using Mobil DTE™ 732 turbine lubricant since 2013 and had accumulated over 96,000 hours with no trips or signs of varnish, far surpassing GE’s 64,000-hour overhaul-to-overhaul interval. The company wanted to explore ways to further extend the life of Mobil DTE™ 732 to their 2027 outage and reached to the Mobil™ Engineering Team for support.

Through the use of Mobil™ Solvancer® and the robust performance of Mobil DTE™ 732, the customer was able to save an estimated $600,000 by avoiding an extended 2025 outage and continuing production into the 2027 major outage.
