Rediscover the Unique Artistic Creations of the late Harry Crowley (1898-1979)

Hudson Valley Auctioneers is pleased to offer a selection of art from the early 1940’s by Harry Crowley, artist & musician.
Although Mr. Crowley did not have the opportunity of a high school education, he graduated from the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, he taught advanced piano at both the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music and the Westchester Conservatory of music in White Plains where he was on the faculty for over 25 years.
He also taught privately with one of his best known pupils being the late Gloria Swanson.
His studio piano was the Baldwin grand piano once owned and used as a practice instrument by the late Claudio Arrau

Harry Crowley began to paint in the early 1940’s at the age of 43 and his creativity falls into the broad classification of abstract expressionism, his early works, of which several examples will be offered in our next auction held on September 14th, developed through the stages of the academic, cubism & abstraction and all date from the early 1940’s.

Totally self taught as a painter he painted because “I find it easier to paint than to write about it”.
His first one man show was in 1948 at New York City’s Salpeter Gallery where he would have numerous subsequent exhibitions over the next several years.
His works are included in the collections of well known figures and businesses used copies of his paintings as the covers of their company holiday greeting cards.

In addition to the exhibitions at Salpeter’s Mr Crowley participated in many group and individual showings samples are “The Whitney Museum of American Art, 1953”, “Pennsylvania Academy of Fine art, 1954”, “The Nebraska Art Association, Lincoln 1952”, “University of Illinois Exhibition of Contemporary American Painting 1951 & 1952”, “Contemporary American Painting, City Art Museum of St Louis 1951”, and more.
