Meet Dillon!

Dillon started with us by helping out in the summer months when he would come home from school, but recently he decided to join the team full time as a Shift Lead.

Dillon is an exemplary Employee, and is always looking for ways to grow, improve his skill set and help out wherever is needed. For example, Dillon has worked on 5S projects on the equipment in the plant, he works on time studies for job setups and productivity, he tracks our daily job costing and reviews low performing jobs, he has trained on our Jennerjahns and fills in as an operator or fork lift driver if needed. He is also involved in our ongoing quality system upgrades, including writing SOP’s, managing work orders for two of our largest customers and is a back up in Shipping. His enthusiasm, dedication and work ethic make him an invaluable asset to this team.

We are overjoyed that Dillon decided to join us full time and we can't wait to see where his career takes him!

What is Paper Converting?

Paper converting is the process of turning raw paper material into other paper products. The converting process includes rewinding and slitting large rolls of paper into smaller, more manageable sizes to fit specific needs. Highly technical machines rewind and slit the rolls of paper. K&L has six slitters for a total range of needs. We have experience with a broad range of substrates, from lightweight tissue, to heavy paperboard, to non-wovens.

Paper converting facilities serve many industries, such as printing, health, food, beverage, beauty, fabric and textiles, film and flexible packaging, pharmaceutical, and more. Even though so much of our world has become digital, paper conversion is a significant player in the global economy. In fact, converted finished paper products can be found in just about every sector and industry.

We are excited to introduce you to some of our team and up first is Brian!

Brian Sell started with us as a temp 11 years ago and now is a dedicated production supervisor at K&L Services. He explains one of his favorite parts about working at K&L is the people he works with and the opportunities for growth.

We consider ourselves lucky to have Brian on our team because he understands the importance of meeting and exceeding customer expectations and he takes great care to ensure that every product leaving our facility reflects the utmost standards of excellence.

The value of manufacturing and converting is often overlooked because you don't think much about it until you need it. We thought it would be fun to shed some light on the terms, processes, and benefits in a series of posts starting with slitting.

So, what is slitting anyway?

Roll slitting is the operation of cutting rolls of raw material into narrow and more usable widths with a machine called the "slitter." The slitter uses circular blades to cut through paper or other substrates in precise strips for various uses. Slitting is commonly used in many industries, including printing, publishing, packaging, and manufacturing.

K&L has been in the paper slitting business since 1972, giving us over four decades of expertise. Now, in 2023 have six slitter machines giving us a wide range of capabilities to work in numerous markets. Our experience with multiple substrates, from very lightweight materials like tissue to heavy paperboard, makes us the ideal choice for challenging jobs. Roll width is no problem; our specialized machines cover very narrow 1/2" rolls and span up to 114" rolls.
