Did some food plot highway planting today on a clients property on the Shade Mountain. I’ve been working on doing TSI work on top of the mountain for a few weeks. Now that there will be more sun coming in I told the landowner I would plant a clover highway on the old logging/atv path where it was day-lighted enough so that’s what I did today. I also did some more TSI which I will continue doing the rest of the week.

This morning I was on a clients property doing some more TSI work. Girdling is a form of TSI and by following the forestry management plan for the property we can do this method and kill the black birch without herbicide. I also came across a patch of American hazelnut which I native, but very hard to find in our area that’s natively growing. Also in the area that I treated today had some good oak red/white coming up so this is a good thing to see!!!

First picture is a work in progress after two years post TSI. All the beneficial early successional plants are there in the stand as the picture truly doesn’t show all of it. I will be doing some extra TSI in this stand via girdling the mid story hickory as I feel not enough sun is allowing this area to reach it full potential yet. There’s lots of deer browse in this area also which isn’t helping.

Second picture is what I started with when I first worked on this property as it’s a true biological desert and provides very little habitat and browse for deer, turkey, and other game/non-game species. The TSI projects will continue over the years to allow more sunlight to do what it needs to do and create better habitat and a healthier forest.

Did some boarder cutting/edge cut of all the birch and a few red maple along a food plot for a client this morning. This will allow more sunlight to reach the edge of the woods and allow other trees, brambles, and forbs to grow in the tops of the trees along the edge of the woods. This habitat management technique allow for more daylight movement for wildlife to use the food plot as well.

Did some food plot prep work on a clients property yesterday mowing the corn. The deer didn’t leave any corn to waste!!! This plot will be a rotation of corn and soybeans. If the deer over browse the beans I will over seed with a fall food plot.

Did a little walk with my wife and daughter tonight on our part of the farm and I just can’t believe how things are looking up for the overall habitat projects that are coming along!!! The clover looks great the corn plot is still being worked by the deer and fruit trees are looking excellent!!! Also planted more trees and shrubs across the farm to increase the native woody cover on the property.

I hope to keep you all updated on the progress of all the habitat projects on our farm!!!
