In leadership, reactivity is an easy stasis. We never know what we are going to experience from day to day, so we are prepared to handle anything.

But real leadership is deeply observational and has a futuristic vision.

Real leaders see problems long before others and apply preventive measures so that issues do not evolve into catastrophes.

To develop relationships with employees does not mean that leaders develop close friendships with their employees; it means this:

1. They have established a foundation of mutual respect.
2. They can rely on clear communication patterns.
3. They can work collaboratively and productively.

In leadership, we have to abandon the hope that everyone will like us.

We have to commit instead to serving everyone equally well.

Employees feel good in the workplace when they can trust their leaders' objectivity, fairness, and consistency.

When the day is busy, but someone walks in who needs help, leaders look up, make eye contact, and listen.

When the team is in the weeds and struggling to achieve the mission, leaders look up, find the way, and lead the way.

When leaders are lost and needing support, they look up their mentors and ask for help, ask for support, and get back on track.

Leaders always look up.

Leaders are always challenged by the day-to-day happenings in the workplace. Their agility in this space is normal and expected.

To drop one task and move to a large project with ease - this is normal for us. To go from a direct conversation with a single employee to a team meeting for multiple departments - perfectly normal.

But what about our flexibility over time? What about our response to societal and organizational winds of change?

Leaders should develop flexibility in perspective, too, taking time to study change and how it will impact the workplace.

Spend time at the start of each week at the thirty thousand foot view.
Then zoom in to ten thousand and see what is required of you in terms of flexibility.

Repeat each week until you train your mind to anticipate changes and trends and to respond easily and accordingly.
