Deep Wood Press - Chad Pastotnik Established 1992 by Chad Pastotnik, Deep Wood Press has continued the centuries old tradition of han Deep Wood Press, established 1992 by Chad Pastotnik.

Nestled in the forest along the banks of the Cedar River in Northern Michigan’s Antrim County, Deep Wood Press has continued the centuries old tradition of hand crafted printed items, bindings and book matter. With a foundation in fine art and a careful attention to craftsmanship and detail the end result is more than a vehicle for information. Our books are printed via letterpress with metal type on fine papers and illustrated with artwork from original wood engravings, lino cuts and intaglio prints created by Chad Pastotnik and other gifted artists for these editions. The sheets are then bound by hand in traditional and contemporary book structures to please the eye as well as the mind – which we endeavor to impress as carefully as our papers.

As some of you may know, I am on the board of directors for the Louis Jou Foundation in Les Baux, France and in late September/October I’m here working and teaching out of Jou’s former studio.

Going through old standing forms tied up and wrapped was found a mostly complete specimen of Jou’s self designed and bespoke typefaces in all 7 sizes! They don’t exist anywhere else in the world and certainly not digitally.

It is far better than the specimen sheet we previously had which I have been bringing to the book shows the last few years and it is complete with all the logotypes and extended character sets.

I spent the day fixing it up from years of abuse and getting it moved onto a huge galley. Hopefully tomorrow I’ll have a proof and pull an edition this week on one of the Stanhope presses.

We will be offering it for sale. I can roll some up to bring back to the US to save on shipping. Stay tuned!

The bindery monkeys were here in force today sewing up the paper copies of Mornings at Jack Pine by Jerry Dennis illustrated with wonderful wood engravings from Glenn Wolff.
