Some of your best employees may also be the easiest to overlook.

They're dependable. They do great work. They help others without being asked. And they rarely make sure everyone knows about it.

That's exactly why leaders have to pay attention.

Notice the person who quietly helps a new employee get up to speed. Notice the person who consistently follows through. Notice the person who makes the team better without needing credit for it.

Then, say something.

Being humble and hardworking doesn't mean someone doesn't want to feel appreciated. Even your most loyal employees can get tired of feeling invisible.

Don't walk right past amazing just because amazing isn't asking for attention.

If you want to build pride on your team, here’s the truth:

You are not repeating the good stories enough.

In workshops, I ask leaders to share a story that makes them proud to work at their company.

Then I ask, “Who hasn’t heard that before?”

Most of the hands go up.

We assume people know the wins.
We assume they feel the impact.
They don’t.

Culture is built through repetition.

You do not have to tell the story the same way every time.
But if it matters, tell it more than you think.

That is how pride spreads.

Recognition isn't about convincing people to care. Most people already do.

They care about doing good work. Supporting their team. Providing for their family. Serving their customers. Living up to their own standards.

The power of recognition is that it reinforces those reasons.

It tells someone:
➡️Your effort mattered.
➡️Your contribution was noticed.
➡️What you do has value here.

That may seem simple, but don't underestimate it.

When people know their work matters, they're a lot more likely to keep bringing their best to it.
Recognition doesn't create motivation out of thin air. It strengthens what's already there.

𝐏𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭, 𝐚𝐥𝐰𝐚𝐲𝐬.

Success isn't built on processes or products alone — it’s built on the growth, trust, and commitment of the people who make it all happen. Invest in them, and you invest in your future.

Too often, organizations focus solely on picking “the right person” for supervisory roles—and then stop there.

As Brett Hoogeveen highlights in this episode of the BetterCulture Podcast, that’s only the first key step. Once you’ve chosen the right person, effective training becomes essential.

Without clear leadership training, frontline supervisors are left to interpret what leadership means on their own. But when organizations build a common vision of great leadership — and every supervisor knows what’s expected — suddenly, supervisors become resources for one another, consistency improves, and every employee has a shot at reporting to an exceptional leader.

The bottom line: Pick the right people AND invest in them. That’s how you build a truly better culture.

Strong leaders don’t have to be the best at everything.

They do need to be willing to recognize where they can improve and learn from the people around them.

Identify a skill you want to strengthen. Find someone on your team who excels at it. Then ask them to coach you.

That kind of vulnerability does more than build your skills. It shows your team that growth isn’t just something leaders expect from others. It’s something they practice themselves.

Great leadership starts with being willing to learn.

Most leaders don’t struggle because they lack good ideas.
They struggle because their ideas don’t stick.

If you want your words to be remembered, respected, and repeated, you can’t just say them — you have to highlight them.

In this FastBlast clip from the BetterCulture Podcast, Brett Hoogeveen shares a simple communication tool that helps people lean in, listen better, and actually remember what matters most.

Because words matter.
But highlighted words? They echo.

Leadership development has a funny habit of becoming an event.

A workshop. A conference. A book. A really inspiring 47-minute keynote.

And then…Tuesday happens.

Real leadership growth takes repetition. It takes practice. It takes opportunities to wrestle with real challenges, learn alongside other leaders, and keep getting better over time.

That’s the idea behind BetterCulture’s Virtual Leadership Academy.

Each month, leaders come together for live leadership development, coaching, practical tools, and a community committed to becoming the kind of leaders people actually want to work for.

Less autopilot. More intentional leadership.

I’ve sat in too many rooms where leaders talk about how much “culture matters”… but then avoid the tough calls that actually prove it.

Here’s the truth:
If you aren’t willing to confront conflict, hold your managers accountable, or part ways with people who tear things down — your culture talk is just lip service.

Culture isn’t about rah-rah events or posters on the wall. It’s about caring enough to act.

What’s the hardest culture decision you’ve had to make as a leader?
