What is an "Accessibility Library"?

The Akron-Summit County Public Library has recently launched a brand-new resource for its residents, an Accessibility Library!

This library is a resource center dedicated to making events more accessible and inclusive for those with disabilities. They provide services ranging from sensory travel kits to audio description devices, as well as planning guides and assistance for creating accessible events, all at no cost.

This project was curated by the artist and founder of Art Speaks Audacity to Advocate, Alicia Hopkins:

โ€œAs a disabled artist, I found that arts in Akron weren't accessible and I wanted to change that. I knew that with the help of an accessibility library events could be inclusive and accessible in a way that opens doors for opportunities for people with disabilities and older adults to engage in the arts in all avenues."

A public library providing accessible and inclusive resources is a great step in making accessibility a community priority. We hope that many other cities across the country see this example and make an Accessibility Library of their own.

Do you identify as having a visible disability and are between the ages of 18 to 64? Do you have about 10 minutes to complete an anonymous online survey on how media relates to self-esteem within the disability community,? Link in comments.

As a part of their masterโ€™s program two students at
Central Washington University are conducting a research project.
They would greatly appreciate your time! Please share our survey with others in the disability community!

Have you ever had to wonder if an event you were attending was wheelchair accessible, or if the restaurant you chose had low tables and a bathroom that you could use?

If you are an able-bodied person, these are questions you have never had to ask yourself when going out into the world, but these are just a couple of the many questions a disabled person has to consider every time they leave their home. Many people attempt to put themselves into the shoes of a person with a disability, but there are so many small things that able-bodied individuals take for granted on a day-to-day basis that are a battle for the disabled community. The article below shines a light on a few of the many things a disabled person has to think about every day.

At Wandke Accessibility Consulting, our goal is to create an environment, both virtually and in person, where we can eliminate as many of these worries for the disability community as possible. Get in touch with our team if you want to see how we can make your business a welcoming and inclusive place for everyone.

๐ŸŽ‰ 33 years ago today, the Americans with Disabilities Act was passed into law! ๐ŸŽ‰

Today, we celebrate this groundbreaking event that began the charge towards a fully accessible world.

While there is still a long way to go, the ADA will forever be the foundation that all accessibility and disability activism is built upon.

Another big step in becoming an ally of the disabled community is familiarizing yourself with the concept of ableism. Ableism is discrimination against those that have a physical or mental handicap that the average "able-bodied" person does not. It can range from a workplace that is inaccessible to harmful assumptions people make about the disabled.

Ableism can be a tricky topic because many people have never been taught about what it is and how to identify it, but this deep-seeded bias has done lots of harm to the disability community.

There are many resources that can help an individual learn about this, but when it comes to dismantling ableism within an organization, more drastic steps may be needed.

Fortunately, at Wandke Consulting we offer a wide range of trainings to help educate you and your workforce. One of these trainings is focused on ableism: how to identify it and how to eliminate it from within your business.

Check out our website to learn more and contact us if you want to take the next step towards creating an ableist-free culture.

Educating oneself on the importance of accessibility is a crucial first step in acknowledging the need for it to be improved.

Here are some figures that help put the need for accessibility into perspective:

๐Ÿ”น 71% of website visitors with disabilities will leave a website that is not accessible.
๐Ÿ”น 98% of the world's top one million websites don't offer full accessibility.
๐Ÿ”น 60% of screen reader users feel that web content accessibility is getting worse.
๐Ÿ”น One study found 815,600 WCAG compliance issues among Fortune 100 companies.

As an organization, it may be time to ask yourself if the steps you are taking to ensure accessibility are placed in the hands of automation-based testing that fails to achieve real accessibility. If this is the case, we at Wandke Consulting can help you achieve a truly accessible and inclusive experience for your clients. More can be found on these statistics at: https://www.crownpeak.com/blog/accessibility-ada/the-ultimate-list-of-web-accessibility-and-ada-statistics

These web accessibility and ADA statistics show the importance of accessibility from the standpoints of risk, inclusion, and market expansion.
