On this day in history, April 21st, 1930, the worst fire in prison U.S. history broke out at the Ohio Penitentiary in Columbus. This fire would claim the lives of 322 inmates and change the course of corrections in the state of Ohio for good. Although one hour south of Mansfield, the result of this fire would split survivors between the London Prison Farm, and the Ohio State Reformatory. From what records indicate, inmates brought up from the Penitentiary were housed in the north side of our West Cell Block, while other inmates of the Reformatory were housed in "peculiar situations". Hundreds of inmates brought from Columbus would eventually be returned by October of 1930, but their stay here was anything but easy, and maximum-security inmates would continue to be sent to the Reformatory until it closed in 1990.
