I posted this photo on January 22. “Using my voice or performances without consent isn’t innovation,” I wrote, “it’s stealing something personal and turning it into a product. Artists deserve control over their work and identities.”
As a voiceover artist, I am acutely sensitive to the encroachment of AI voices, thus sharing a position with creative people of all media. In addition, I am aware of the environmental destruction inherent in the production of generative AI, as well as the mindless slop that inundates our social media feeds and the laziness it encourages among workers in many industries, not just creative types.
However, on February 5, I did something antithetical to that position. Following the trend among some of my Facebook friends, I asked ChatGPT to create a caricature of me based on an uploaded image and what it could find out about me. I thought what they sent back was cute and amusing, and I made it my profile pic across my social media, both personal and professional.
With this one impulsive and thoughtless act, I not only contradicted my earlier statement, but also expressed support for all the bad things that generative AI does and represents. I also betrayed my fellow VO artists, as well as all creative people, a number of whom I consider to be friends and associates.
I deeply regret doing this, and I apologize to you all. I have taken the image down, and you will never see it again. I will never again use generative AI for any purpose. I will also do what I can to protest the theft of artists and their work.
