🏠 LET’S TALK HOUSING — BECAUSE “HOUSING” DOESN’T MEAN THE SAME THING TO EVERYONE!

As someone who has spent years leading housing programs and now owns and operates a licensed residential assisted living home, I’ve seen firsthand how confusing the housing and residential-services landscape can be.

Families may hear terms like shelter, transitional housing, supportive housing, group home, Adult Family Home, assisted living, or residential care — but what do those terms actually mean?

And if you’re thinking about starting a housing or residential-care business, do you know the difference between providing housing and providing licensed care and services?

That’s why I’m starting a HOUSING EDUCATION SERIES! 📚🏠

WHAT KIND OF HOUSING ARE WE TALKING ABOUT?

Over the next several posts, I’ll break down the differences between:

🔹 Emergency & Homeless Shelters
Short-term emergency housing for individuals and families experiencing homelessness or an immediate housing crisis.

🔹 Transitional Housing
Temporary housing designed to help people move from homelessness or instability toward permanent housing and greater independence.

🔹 Supportive Housing
Housing combined with supportive services that help individuals maintain stability and independence.

🔹 Independent Living
Housing for people who generally manage their own daily living without ongoing residential care.

🔹 Affordable & Subsidized Housing
Housing where eligibility, income and/or public assistance may help make rent affordable.

🔹 Rooming Houses & Shared Housing
Different forms of housing where individuals may rent rooms or share common spaces — but these arrangements are not necessarily licensed residential-care settings.

🔹 Unlicensed Group/Shared Living Arrangements
A home may have several unrelated people living together, but having multiple people in a house does not automatically make it a licensed residential care facility. The services being provided, who is providing them, and the applicable laws and regulations matter.

🔹 Licensed Residential Care Homes
These are settings where residents receive regulated care and/or services and the provider is operating under the applicable state licensing requirements.

🔹 Adult Family Homes (AFHs)
A residential setting that provides care and services to residents in a home-like environment under Wisconsin's applicable licensing requirements.

🔹 Assisted Living
A broad term that can include different licensed residential settings designed to provide varying levels of support while promoting residents' dignity and independence.

AND HERE'S THE PART I REALLY WANT PEOPLE TO UNDERSTAND…

🏡 A house is not automatically an assisted living facility.

🏡 A landlord is not automatically a care provider.

🏡 Having residents in a home does not automatically mean the home is licensed.

🏡 Providing housing is different from providing regulated care and services.

And just because someone calls something a “group home” doesn't necessarily tell you what it actually is, what license it operates under, or what protections and services are available to the people living there.

The details matter.

For families, understanding these differences can help you ask better questions and make more informed decisions about where you or your loved one lives.

For entrepreneurs, understanding these differences BEFORE opening your doors can help you avoid costly mistakes and, most importantly, protect the people you intend to serve.

I'M GOING TO TALK ABOUT THE BUSINESS SIDE TOO. 💼

If you're considering starting a residential housing or care business, I'll be talking about:

✔️ Licensing & regulation
✔️ Zoning & property considerations
✔️ Staffing requirements
✔️ Training & qualifications
✔️ Resident rights
✔️ Medicaid & other funding sources
✔️ Private-pay services
✔️ MCOs and the role they may play
✔️ Documentation & compliance
✔️ Insurance & risk management
✔️ Operating expenses
✔️ Rates & reimbursement
✔️ The difference between housing revenue and service revenue
✔️ And the REAL cost of operating a quality residential program

Because opening a residential care business isn't simply:

“I have a house. I'll put people in it.”

There is a lot more to it.

AND FOR FAMILIES…

I'll also share questions you should ask before choosing a housing or residential-care option:

❓ Is the setting licensed?

❓ What type of license does it have?

❓ What services are actually provided?

❓ Who provides the care?

❓ What happens when someone's needs change?

❓ Who pays for the housing?

❓ Who pays for the services?

❓ What are the resident's rights?

❓ Who do you contact if there is a problem?

❓ Is this setting appropriate for your loved one's level of need?

Housing is more than a building.

It is about safety, stability, dignity, independence, support, affordability and quality of life.

And for those providing these services, it's about understanding that you are not just operating a business — you are creating someone's home.

That responsibility should never be taken lightly.

💬 What should I explain first: homeless shelters, transitional housing, supportive housing, Adult Family Homes, assisted living, or starting a residential care business?

BIG NEWS! I’m excited to share a new chapter in my journey as a Parent Leadership Advocate! 💜

For more than a decade, King Consulting Services has been committed to building the leadership capacity of parents and families and creating opportunities for those with lived experience to have a meaningful voice in the systems that impact their lives.

That work has always been deeply personal and purposeful for me. I believe parents aren't simply people who should be served by systems — parents are leaders, partners, advocates, and change agents.

I'm incredibly proud to share that I recently completed the National Parent Leadership Institute (NPLI) Parent Leadership Training Institute (PLTI) National Training in Saint Paul, Minnesota, and received my Certificate of Accreditation! 🎓✨

And there's more…

King Consulting Services is already a community partner on several local initiatives in our community — and I'm excited to continue serving as a consultant and now Phase 2 facilitator! 🙌🏾

This opportunity allows me to bring together more than a decade of experience in parent leadership development, community engagement, systems change and lived-experience leadership with the powerful PLTI framework.

I am especially excited about what this means for the families and communities we serve.

This isn't just a certificate. It's another tool for building power, strengthening parent voice, developing leaders, and helping families move from being participants in systems to becoming leaders who help shape those systems.

I'm grateful to NPLI for this opportunity, to the incredible parent leaders and facilitators I've learned alongside, and to all of the community partners who continue to believe in the power of families.

The work continues. The circle gets bigger. And the possibilities are endless! 💜✊🏾

📸 A few moments from my NPLI journey — and a certificate that represents so much more than a credential. It represents a commitment to continue building parent leaders and transforming communities.
