Spotted Lanternfly has hatched out across many areas of West Virginia. This is the first year that their populations will be very high across Monongalia County. At present, the insects are black with white spots. Soon, they will be red with black and white markings. To reduce the amount of these insect pests around your neighborhood, remove tree-of-heaven and treat freshly cut stumps with herbicide. Insects can also be killed with insecticides. Some examples of insecticides that can be used are Sevin and Talak. Although there is no need to report sightings of spotted lanternfly in the Morgantown area, if you have questions about spotted lanternfly or tree-of-heaven, contact the WVDA at bugbusters.wvda.us

Spring Fire Season rules are in effect. No outdoor burning between 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Winds and dry air allow fires to escape quickly. Clear 10 feet around your burn site. Never leave a fire unattended. Be careful and help us protect West Virginia. Fires must be attended at all times. Violations can result in fines!

🌲 One acre of forest or wetland

➡️ Only about 750 gallons of water runs off, because vegetation and soil absorb, store, and slowly release rainfall. Forested and wetland ecosystems act like natural sponges—enhancing infiltration, reducing peak flows, and filtering pollutants.

🚗 One acre of parking lot

➡️ Produces roughly 27,000 gallons of runoff. Impermeable surfaces like asphalt prevent infiltration entirely, causing water to flow rapidly across the surface. This increases flood risk, erodes waterways, and transports contaminants into rivers and lakes.

🔬 Why it matters:

As urban areas expand, the loss of permeable, vegetated landscapes amplifies stormwater challenges. Integrating green infrastructure such as bioswales, permeable pavements, restored wetlands, and urban trees can significantly reduce runoff volumes and improve water quality.
