Over the past two years, you've introduced us to some incredible people through Pink October. A nurse who spent her days caring for others until cancer turned her own life upside down. A school secretary who kept showing up for her students all through chemo. A woman who keeps a smile on and takes it one day at a time.

Quick fall tip: clean your gutters before the first freeze.

When water backs up and freezes along the roofline, it forms ice dams that push water under your shingles and into your walls. We see this every winter in Bend and Redmond.

Thirty minutes with a ladder now saves a phone call to us in January.

🔥 Electrical fires don't usually start with a bang. They start with warning signs most people ignore.

If you notice any of these in your home, don't brush them off:

➡️ Lights that flicker when nothing else is running
➡️ Outlets or switch plates that feel warm to the touch
➡️ A faint burning smell with no visible source
➡️ Breakers that trip repeatedly on the same circuit

These are signs of wiring issues that can smolder inside walls for hours or days before becoming a fire. Older homes in Bend, Sisters, and Redmond are especially prone to this, particularly if the original wiring was never updated.

Get an electrician out. Sooner, not later.

It's Fire Prevention Week, and this year's NFPA theme is lithium-ion battery safety. Laptops, e-bikes, scooters, power tools, phones - they're all over our homes now. And when these batteries fail, they fail fast.

A few things worth knowing:

1️⃣ Always use the charger that came with the device. Off-brand chargers are a leading cause of battery fires
2️⃣ Don't charge devices on beds, couches, or pillows. Hard, flat surfaces only
3️⃣ If a battery is swollen, hot, or smells off, stop using it immediately and get it outside
4️⃣ Make sure you have working smoke detectors where you charge devices, especially bedrooms

🔥 After a house fire, you're dealing with two types of damage, not one.

The fire causes obvious destruction. But the water used to put it out creates its own emergency.

Here's what we typically walk into:

➡️ Saturated drywall, insulation, and flooring from fire hoses
➡️ Soot and smoke residue mixing with standing water
➡️ Structural materials weakened by both heat and moisture

At Central Oregon Disaster Restoration, fire remediation and water extraction happen at the same time because they have to.
