The Bristol Township EAC Species Spotlight shines on the Red Fox this week. Its scientific name is Vulpes vulpes (VULL-peez VULL-peez).
The species is classified as a furbearer and managed by the PA Game Commission, with full hunting seasons and no bag limits. The Red Fox is not federally protected except for certain subspecies. It is known for its long, red-orange fur, slightly darkened on the back, with black ears, legs, feet, and a long bushy white-tipped tail. It measures 22-25 inches in length, with an additional 14-16 inch tail, and weighs 8-12 pounds.
Pups are born in spring and leave their mothers after a few months, reaching maturity at 10 months. In the wild, they live 3-5 years, compared to 10-12 years in captivity. Males are called “dogs” and females are called “vixens”.
They are opportunistic omnivores who eat whatever is available (small mammals, frogs and other reptiles, grass and berries, even roadkill). The Red Fox favors lightly wooded areas, marshes, and streams due to their diet.
They are nocturnal, active between dusk and dawn. They are susceptible to Rabies. Their adaptability allows them to thrive in diverse habitats, including urban areas. They are solitary but may form small family groups during the breeding season. Their keen senses and agility help them scavenge for food and avoid predators.
