Bill Runzel IV started Lake Cable in the 1990’s on the west side of Chicago with just 3 machines for making wire – and a total of four people. Fortunately, Bill had quite a few things going for him during those humble beginnings. For one, he comes from a family that’s been in the wire business for over 100 years and 4 generations. So let’s just say he knew a thing or two about how to make great wi

re. Second, he knew that he wouldn’t be the most trusted name by being the biggest name in the industry. He would have to innovate in ways other makers of wire and plants couldn’t. It was no small order:

• He’d have to be faster, offering the shortest lead times in the industry
• He’d have to deliver more consistently than anyone
• He’d have to have a process that would outsmart traditional manufacturing
• He’d have to hire the best people and cross-train them
• He’d have to implement a system to eliminate project guesswork
• He’d have to cultivate relationships with customers by guiding them, not merely serving them. We’re close to 400,000 square feet today.

We love inspiring the next generation of innovators
Our Process Engineer, Mariana Sanchez Badillo, recently visited Glenn Westlake Middle School to speak with 7th and 8th grade students about the world of cable manufacturing. She gave students a behind-the-scenes look at how cables are made and shared what it’s like to work as a process engineer.
From raw materials to finished product, Mariana helped bring engineering to life—sparking curiosity and showing students the real-world impact of STEM careers.

This past Friday, Lake Cable proudly welcomed students from the Technological Center of DuPage as part of Manufacturing Day!
