🚦BIKE-PED POV: EXPERIENCE A HAWK CROSSING 🛣️
If you're not used to traveling outside of a car, you may not realize the infrastructure that makes active transportation safer. Our newest series, Bike-Ped POV, will show firsthand experiences with these features and how to use them for a more comfortable experience.

🚨First up is a HAWK (high-intensity activated crosswalk) or PHB (pedestrian hybrid beacon) crossing. These signals are usually used in higher-speed or higher-traffic volume areas or uncontrolled intersections where a typical traffic light isn't needed, but a method of stopping all lanes of traffic is necessary for pedestrians or bike riders who need to cross a roadway.

Next week, our own Ryan Hale is co-presenting a session at CNU34. Mike Lydon with Street Plans is leading the session, with support from Tim Conklin at Northwest Arkansas Regional Planning Commission.

“Quick-Build in Northwest Arkansas and Beyond” covers the implementation of a month-long demonstration project that built temporary, protected bike lanes in Bella Vista, Bentonville, and Rogers. This session will explore the effectiveness and challenges associated with these tactical “Quick-Build” projects across the NWA region and other communities across the country.

The final city in our NWA downtown highlight series is Bentonville!🛍️

It's tough to beat Downtown Bentonville Incorporated's proximity to museums like Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art and The Momentary, as well as Compton Gardens & Arboretum, hotels, coffee shops, and restaurants. The City also recently completed the A Street Promenade, a vehicle-free, pedestrian and bicycle promenade that features seating, food trucks, and play areas for kids that connects the city's parks and plazas.

The HUB Bike Lounge and Ledger Bentonville are two of the many bike-friendly buildings in the area. Not to mention connectivity to the Razorback Greenway and world-class mountain biking trails, there's something here for everyone.

Rogers is the third highlight in our NWA downtown series! 🛝

The City of Rogers downtown amenities include Railyard Park, which has a splash pad and play yard for kids and Butterfield Stage for concerts. The park is adjacent to the farmer's market, the internationally recognized ONYX Coffee Lab headquarters, and other restaurants and shops.

The area includes centrally located amenities in the Frisco Plaza, which has ample seating areas and tables, offering easy accessibility for families and people of all age groups.

For the more adventurous riders, the nearby The Railyard Bike Park offers different jumps and has trails that connect to Lake Atalanta. The Railyard loop also connects to the Razorback Greenway for even more trail options.

Next up in our NWA downtown highlight series is Springdale!🪁

Downtown Springdale's transformation and growth have spurred the city to investment in additional amenities, including recent Mile 16 improvements. The updates include pedestrian crosswalks and better connectivity to the Razorback Greenway and the updated Luther George Park that reopened in 2024.

The area also features Walter Turnbow Park, offering tucked-away riverside seating next to restaurants and shops.

We've spent a lot of time exploring Northwest Arkansas during our benchmarking tours and programs, so we wanted to highlight some of our favorite features in each downtown. First up is Fayetteville! 🚲️

According to PeopleForBikesNWA, Fayetteville is the #1 ranked city in Arkansas for bikeability. The City is continually investing in walkable and bikeable improvements, such as the Ramble and Civic Plaza. Fayetteville is also ranked a gold-level Bike-Friendly Community from the League of American Bicyclists for factors like protected bike lanes, safe crossings, speed limits, and connections.
