The term “amiant” was first used by Dioscorides of the first century A.D. J. Brill, Leide –1915).

to describe a stone found in Cyprus that resembles alum (salts of aluminum) that may be cleft. Amiant is from the greek word άμίαυτος or “undefilable”. This name was applied to the finer and silkier kinds of asbestos ( Laufer, Berthold, "Asbestos and Salamander, An Essay in Chinese and Hellenistic Folk-Lore", Extrait du T’oung-pao, 2e Série, Vol. XVI, No. 3, Juillet 1915, Libraire et Imprimerie,

E. The finest variety of asbestos is known as amianthus, and the most beautiful specimens of this come from Tarantaise in Savoy. Hence the fabric woven from asbestos is sometimes known as amianthine cloth ("Cloth Made From Asbestos", Union Newspaper, located at the Ohio Historical Center Archives, Library Newspaper Roll #8847, Vol. 12, No. 47, Page 02, 11/30/1918)

When an inspector puffs out their chest and says "I don't miss a thing" that is a big red flag. Who would have known that a 1/4" thick sheet of asbestos-cement would be sandwiched between the wood. The assumption is that it was for fire rating but there is that huge opening that was only covered with glass.

FULL DISCLOSURE: I did not find this, I missed this. The renovation contractor brought this to my attention. It is great to work with knowledgeable and conscientious contractors.

This is a typical residential remodel where the finished drywall is installed over the original plaster wall. Most of the plaster has been removed but the scratch remains between the old wood lath. File this under "full depth" or "multiple layers". Got to be a thorough inspection.
