The Bethany Beach Volunteer Fire Company was established in 1948. Our fire department is also equipped with many programs.

We are a combination department that provides Fire/EMS coverage to over 15 miles of beach front, as well as communities and assisting neighboring companies. We have a live in program, ride along program, EMS member, and duty crew program. You can be any of these, just inquire with-in.

Bethany Beach Fire Company Supports Summer Concert Series

Throughout the summer, the Bethany Beach Fire Company provided a dedicated ambulance and emergency medical personnel at the Bethany Beach Bandstand during music events expected to draw large crowds. This standby coverage allowed our crews to provide a rapid response to any medical emergency that arose during the festivities.

While attending these events, our members also had the opportunity to connect with residents and visitors. Crews welcomed the public to tour the ambulance, view the lifesaving equipment carried onboard, and learn how these tools are used during medical emergencies.

These interactions allowed our members to promote fire and injury prevention, answer questions, and help the community better understand the emergency medical services we provide. The Bethany Beach Fire Company is proud to support local events while strengthening our relationship with the community we are honored to serve.

EARLY-MORNING RESIDENTIAL FIRE IN GULLS NEST

At approximately 3:00 a.m. on Friday, September 4, 2026, during an early-morning thunderstorm, the Bethany Beach Volunteer Fire Company was dispatched for an automatic fire alarm in the 29000 block of Surfside Drive in the Gulls Nest community.

First-arriving units found a four-story, single-family residence with no smoke or fire visible from the exterior. Crews completed a 360-degree assessment, searched for a Knox Box, and requested a property representative. After the first-arriving officer detected an odor of smoke, and with no Knox Box or representative available, crews forced entry to investigate.

As firefighters advanced through the residence, they encountered a significant smoke condition on the fourth floor. Command upgraded the incident to a working residential fire, bringing mutual-aid assistance from the Millville, Roxana, Ocean City, and Frankford fire companies.

Crews located fire concealed within the walls and ceiling of the fourth floor. Due to the home’s construction and the difficulty accessing the concealed fire, additional assistance was requested from the Selbyville and Dagsboro fire companies.

Firefighters opened the affected walls and ceiling, reached the concealed fire, and extinguished it. Crews operated for approximately two hours before bringing the incident under control.

Sussex County Medic 105 remained on scene to provide medical support. Station 83 provided standby coverage at Station 70, ensuring continued emergency coverage throughout the district.

The Delaware State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the origin and cause of the fire.

Bethany Beach Fire Company Members Attend Elite Truck Company Training

On Sunday, August 23, four members of the Bethany Beach Volunteer Fire Company traveled to Indianapolis to attend an intensive truck company operations course at the Fire Department Training Network (FDTN).

FDTN is recognized for providing some of the most demanding and realistic fire service training in the United States. Throughout the course, our members will strengthen their knowledge, sharpen their skills, and participate in challenging hands-on training designed to prepare firefighters for complex emergency situations.

The Bethany Beach Volunteer Fire Company proudly recognizes these members for their dedication to continuing their fire service education. Their willingness to invest their time and effort reflects their strong commitment to professional development and to providing the highest level of service to the community we proudly serve.

Patient Airlifted Following Fall in Cotton Patch Hills

At approximately 10:15 a.m. today, Bethany Beach Fire Company units were dispatched to the 29000 block of South Cotton Way in the Cotton Patch Hills community for a reported person trapped beneath a tree.

Upon arrival, crews determined that no one was trapped. Instead, a patient had fallen from a ladder onto a second-floor deck and sustained serious injuries.

Due to the severity of the injuries, Delaware State Police Aviation Trooper 2 was requested. Fire and EMS personnel stabilized and packaged the patient before safely removing them from the elevated deck and transferring them to the ambulance.

Trooper 2 landed on Route 1, where the patient was transferred to the aircraft and transported to Christiana Hospital for further treatment.

The vehicle is being sold as-is, where-is, with no warranties expressed or implied.

Sealed bids must include the bidder’s name, contact information, and bid amount. All bids must be received no later than 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 6, 2026.

Vehicle Into Building With Entrapment — Coastal Highway

At approximately 1700 hours today, August 14, 2026, the Bethany Beach Volunteer Fire Company, along with Roxana Volunteer Fire Company, Sussex County Paramedics, and the Sussex County Technical Rescue Team, was dispatched to the 900 block of Coastal Highway for a reported motor vehicle collision involving a vehicle into a building with entrapment.

Arriving units confirmed that a small pickup truck had struck the front of the building, with initial reports indicating as many as three people may have been trapped. Due to the complexity of the incident, additional resources were requested from Ocean City, along with Delaware State Police Trooper 2 and Maryland State Police aviation.

Fire and rescue crews immediately began extrication operations while additional personnel conducted a systematic search of the building for possible victims. Following a thorough search, crews confirmed that two occupants were trapped and that all other occupants had safely exited the building.

Both trapped occupants were successfully extricated by rescue crews and transferred to awaiting medical personnel. Due to the seriousness of their injuries, both patients were transported by helicopter to ChristianaCare in New Castle for further treatment.

Units remained on scene for several hours completing operations before clearing the incident.

The Bethany Beach Volunteer Fire Company would like to thank all of the fire, EMS, law enforcement, aviation, and technical rescue agencies that assisted with this challenging incident. We also extend our appreciation to the departments and crews that handled additional emergency calls in our area while our resources were committed to this incident.

The cooperation and teamwork of all agencies involved helped bring this incident to a successful conclusion.

Water Rescue on Little Assawoman Bay Ends Safely

August 2, 2026 | Approximately 7:30 p.m.

On the evening of August 2, at approximately 7:30 p.m., the Bethany Beach Fire Company was dispatched for a water rescue after reports of a person in distress on a kayak in the Little Assawoman Bay.

Bethany Beach Fire Company marine units, assisted by the Roxana Volunteer Fire Company, immediately began searching the area. During the initial search, responding marine units were unable to locate the kayaker. To expand the search effort, 70-8 requested assistance from the Bethany Beach Police Department with their drone, while the Delaware State Police Aviation Section (Trooper) also responded to assist.

Shortly thereafter, crews successfully located the kayaker approximately 1,000 yards from the original launch site. Ski 2 reached the individual and safely assisted them back to shore.

Once on land, the individual declined evaluation or treatment by EMS. With the rescue completed and the situation resolved safely, all responding units were returned to service.

The Bethany Beach Fire Company would like to thank the Roxana Volunteer Fire Company, Bethany Beach Police Department, Delaware State Police Aviation Section, and Sussex County Emergency Communications for their coordinated response and teamwork, which helped bring the incident to a safe conclusion.

Today, the members of the Bethany Beach Fire Company would like to extend our heartfelt congratulations to our Treasurer, Brandon Elliott, on his retirement from the Bethany Beach Police Department after 20 years of dedicated service to the Town of Bethany Beach.

Throughout his law enforcement career, Brandon exemplified professionalism, integrity, and leadership. As the department’s Lead Criminal Investigator, CALEA Accreditation Manager, and Lead Instructor for the Seasonal Police Officer Training Academy, he made a lasting impact not only within the Bethany Beach Police Department but also on the many officers he mentored throughout their careers.

His commitment to excellence helped shape the next generation of law enforcement professionals, many of whom continue serving their communities in local, state, and federal agencies across the country. His dedication to public service and to the citizens of Bethany Beach has left an enduring legacy.

While Brandon is retiring from his law enforcement career, we are fortunate that he will continue serving our community as a valued member and Treasurer of the Bethany Beach Fire Company.

Congratulations, Brandon, on an incredible career and this well-earned retirement. Thank you for your 20 years of service, leadership, and unwavering commitment to our community. We wish you and your family many years of health, happiness, and new adventures in this exciting next chapter!
