We are pushing through to the end of planting season. We had mostly small jobs this spring, all less than 1,000 trees. Lots of small jobs are often a juggling act of getting the right number of people and plants to each project at the right time. This spring, the big hurdle was dealing with nursery shortages and finding suitable substitute species when others were unavailable.

We are notoriously bad at remembering to take pictures of our work, especially before and after shots, as we tend to just ju.p right in and get to work. So here's a great before and after of mowing down some invasive brush in an old pasture!

March is the time for pre-emergent herbicide applications. This pollinator habitat plot consists of perennial native grasses and wildflowers but has an infestation of annual stiltgrass. Pre-emergent affects seeds as they germinate in the spring, preventing growth of the stiltgrass without affecting the established native perennials.
While we have several methods of application, our ATV boomless sprayer is a great option for fields and open forest understories.

A nice before and after shot of a section of hedgerow that we are clearing. Over the past 30+ years, non-native invasive honeysuckle bushes and bittersweet vines took over this field edge. If you look closely, you can see the old farm road we uncovered. The farm owner plans to cut down the tree of heaven, white mulberry, and damaged trees but leave the healthy black cherry and walnut trees.

This week, the cold temperatures allowed for some forest mulching on this riparian restoration project. We had sprayed the non-native invasive brush this past summer and are now mulching it to allow future access. This streamside floodplain suffered heavy ash tree mortality and will be replanted with native trees and shrubs this year.

We are still looking for a few summer crew members for our Invasive Plant Crew.

Well today marks a big milestone in our company, we have been officially in the forestry business for five years!! We are definitely a long way from where we started and can’t believe how things have turned out. We had some struggles over the past year just as we were getting a solid footing that set us back but are looking forward to the future. A big thank you to everyone that supported the endeavor from the beginning or have joined along the way!!

We are finally wrapping up some odd jobs and most importantly fall planting season tomorrow and want to take a moment to reflect on where we are. This has probably been one of the craziest falls and all together years that we have ever had by far. The ripple effects from COVID have been difficult in ways we never would have imagined. Staffing issues, equipment and materials shortages, effectively being shut down in PA for five months, relocating our office (twice), not being able to get our new PA office fully operational, and so much more has been a challenge and definitely not how we had hoped this year would go.
With planting season ending (late) we are looking forward to the winter being a time to reorganize and rebuild. Unfortunately so many projects have been delayed or put on hold as our staff have been stretched thin and trying to keep up. We will be focusing on tying up loose ends on projects, finally starting projects that were put on hold, pursuing new clients and projects, and starting new systems and staff to better accommodate our clients needs.
It’s been an extremely tough and disappointing year but bear with us as we build back stronger and better than ever moving forward.

Cautiously optimistic,

Jacob Shultz
Forester

Forestry often aims to mimic natural events and processes. Timber harvests often focus on mimicking disturbance events such as floods, fires, ice storms, or strong winds such as tornadoes or hurricanes. Group selection harvests focus on removing patches of trees to promote the growth of mid shade tolerant (part shade) species.
This gap created by several trees being knocked over by a straight line wind event is a perfect example. In this oak hickory forest this is a natural group selection disturbance that opened a hole on the canopy and will allow new trees to grow.
