During a two-year detail toward the end of my career at the US Department of Commerce NIST Manufacturing Extension Partnership Program, I was fortunate to work with Emily DeRocco, Assistant Secretary of the US Department of Labor Employment and Training Administration (ETA). I was so fortunate to be a member of her "team" as she launched the WIRED program and many other high-impact strategies. She was a visionary leader, connector, and mentor who inspired everyone around her. Emily believed in “linking and leveraging” people and resources for the greater good. Whether as Assistant Secretary at the U.S. Department of Labor ETA, President of the Manufacturing Institute, or in her many leadership roles on corporate and academic boards, she championed the power of work and the right for every individual to “work hard at work worth doing.”
This belief continues to guide the DeRocco Fellows program, which was established to honor Emily’s remarkable career in education and workforce development. The program is dedicated to creating pathways to leadership for young women in advanced manufacturing—an industry Emily was deeply passionate about during the last decade of her life.
Emily left us unexpectedly in 2021, but her legacy lives on through the work of the volunteer team behind the DeRocco Fellows. They are committed to empowering the next generation of women with the skills, confidence, and support they need to thrive in manufacturing careers.
This season, I invite you to join me in supporting this incredible cause. A donation to the DeRocco Fellows directly impacts young women, helping them build meaningful futures in an industry Emily so deeply believed in.
