In an AI World, the Process Is the Product |

For years, teachers have told students to show their work.

In math, we want to see the steps. In science, we want to see the experiment. In writing, we ask for drafts. Why? Because we know the final answer doesn't always tell us how a student got there. But when it comes to digital research, the process has become almost completely invisible.

A student submits a polished research paper. The citations are correct. The paragraphsare organized. The writing sounds sophisticated. But what happened before that document appeared? What did the student search? Which sources did they open? Did they evaluate those sources? Did they take notes? Did they change their thinking? Did they use AI to brainstorm, research, revise or write the entire thing? In an AI world, the final product tells us less and less about the learning that happened along the way.

That is why I think focusing on process matters more than ever. And this is where a tool like Learnics becomes particularly valuable. Learnics makes the research process visible by capturing students' online research activity, searches, sources and notes. Instead of only seeing what students produced, teachers can see how they got there.

Consider a seventh-grade student researching the question: Should schools allow students to use cell phones during the school day? The final essay might look great. But imagine being able to see the research behind it. One student searches "school cell phone policies," clicks the first result and begins writing. Another searches several variations of the question, looks at school policies, news articles and research about adolescent attention, and deliberately searches for perspectives that challenge their original opinion.

Both students may turn in a two-page essay. But they did not demonstrate the same research skills. Without seeing the process, it is difficult to know that.

With Learnics, that process becomes something a teacher can actually discuss with a student. Instead of simply saying, "You need better sources," we can ask, "What made you choose this source? What happened when you changed your search? What might you try differently next time?" That is instruction, and it becomes even more important when AI enters the picture.

Imagine an eighth grader researching the effects of social media on teenagers. The final paper is polished, but the teacher isn't sure how much of it reflects the student's ownthinking. Rather than simply trying to determine whether the paper "looks AI-generated," imagine being able to look at the research process. Did the student spend time reading and comparing sources? Did they take notes? Did they visit an AI tool? If so, what role did it play?

AI use alone doesn't tell us whether a student learned or whether they cheated. The process gives us context, and that is the shift I think we need to make. We can't stop students from having access to AI. We shouldn't try to recreate a world where students have to prove they never used it. Instead, we need to teach students how to think, question, research, evaluate and make decisions about the information they encounter, including information generated by AI.

That means we need to see more than the final product. We need to see the messy middle. The searches that didn't work. The sources that were rejected. The notes and the questions and the moments when a student changed direction. The evidence that they wrestled with an idea before arriving at an answer.

For years, we've told students: Show your work. In an AI world, I think that needs a little updating: Show me how you thought. Because when AI can produce the product, the process may be the most important evidence of learning we have.

If you’ve never spent a Sunday night at a kitchen table with a stack of student research papers, it’s hard to capture the specific weight of that moment. You aren’t just grading words on a page; you are looking for the student's voice, their curiosity, and the evidence of the hours they spent ...
