It has been a long day of Idalia tracking and coverage! Last night, Idalia managed to achieve an impressive, but brief Category 4 Hurricane Status. At 7:45AM ET, Idalia made landfall as a Category 3 Hurricane in the Florida Big Bend near Keaton Beach.

Idalia caused record-breaking storm surge and packed a punch with wind gusts. Highest wind gusts of the morning were: 77MPH at Keaton Beach, 81MPH Horseshoe Beach, and 85MPH in Perry (all Florida).

One of the most surprising features of this tropical system was the speed at which it moved. Typically, tropical systems will slow down as they make landfall--in this case, Idalia sustained a steady, 20MPH forward motion all day.

Idalia is now a Tropical Storm located around Hendersonville, SC. The Southeast is not out of the woods yet. From Savannah, GA to Charleston, SC, there is a Storm Surge Warning in effect. Flash Flooding, Tornadoes, and Power Outages are expected hazards as Idalia continues to move forward.

Tomorrow--Hurricane Idalia will make a Florida landfall.

Many cities along Florida's Gulf Coast (including the Panhandle) have been experiencing the effects/onset for most of the day today. All signs pointed to Idalia strengthening throughout the day--and that's exactly what happened. A little after 8:30PM ET we started to see an eyewall appear on satellite. Although Idalia remains a Category 2, we have high confidence that this system will continue to intensify and make landfall as a major hurricane.

Many evacuation orders have been put in place by Florida's Emergency Managers due to the potential catastrophic impacts of storm surge associated with this storm. The Big Bend area of Florida's coast will start to feel tropical-storm-force winds around 2AM overnight tonight.

A lot remains to be seen with Idalia--we'll be keeping a close eye on the track and landfall.

The worst is not over for Florida, as Ian continues to barrel across the I-4 corridor. But this updated track looks a bit interesting in terms of what the future of Ian will look like…

Track update shows a farther-south Ian, moving off the coast earlier. In the morning tomorrow.

BREAKING NEWS: Ian eyewall is starting to come onshore now. Lee County, FL is under an extreme wind warning. Ft. Myers, Sanibel Island, Sarasota, Naples; all starting to see tropical storm force winds and gusts.

This is going to be a VERY long day as Ian is only moving at 9mph--there is a good possibly that it could even slow down to 3mph as it continues to come onshore. Ian is a strong Category 4 storm with maximum sustained winds at 155mph.

09/28/2022

Truly historical events unfolding with Ian. Our video shows a full eyewall replacement with huge growth. This just caused the 3rd highest storm surge in Key West history. Some of the updated warnings from NHC’s 11pm advisory had to include storm surge warnings throughout the Keys, all the way to Key West. Florida is inundated with warnings for hurricanes, flooding, tornadoes, and more.

Ian is still a Category 3 but all signs point towards strengthening. The hurricane is located 105mi SW of Naples. We are in the final hours before landfall. As we wake up tomorrow Ian will be creeping up on Fort Myers Beach/Naples area. More on this storm tomorrow.

is a Category 3 with winds at 120mph. This is the major hurricane category and short term, forecast points to Ian strengthening further to Category 4. Life-threatening storm surge is likely along most of Florida’s west coast and the potential of up to 12ft. from Tampa to Naples.

The track has changed since our early forecasts. I will be back with the most current track, watches and warnings, and timing in just a bit!

For those who have been keeping up with Tropical Storm Ian, the forecasts are beginning to get more organized. This is not panning out to be a very good scenario for the West Coast of Florida. Exact setup and landfalls are still a little unsure at this point—by tomorrow as Ian strengthens to a hurricane, we should have the info we need to begin painting a clearer picture.

Tropical Storm Warnings have been issued for the Florida Keys and Watches have been issued for the Gulf side of South Florida. There is risk of dangerous storm surge along the Gulf Coast and Panhandle by midweek. If you reside in these areas, the time to prep is now. Please pay close attention to evacuation and safety orders for your counties.

I will be tracking the storm as well this week. I will have more for you Monday afternoon and into the evening, so stay tuned.

11pm Ian advisory is out.

After staying fairly level today, late tonight recon missions clearly indicated a drop in pressure and a rise in winds. The rapid intensification we knew Ian would undergo has begun. This is expected to continue until Ian reaches major hurricane status;

In the gulf, a trough digging down will turn the storm to the right, and bring it closer to the Florida Peninsula. Just where it comes ashore isn't fully understood, however the models continue to hone in on an area from about the big bend to Tampa. Even if the storm stays off the coast, storm surge flooding is a BIG concern for folks around Tampa Bay- and relatives there need to follow this very closely.

Timeline still shows a Wednesday/Thursday impact on our area, clearing out through Friday.

For tomorrow we continue to watch intensification and hone those models in. Today the GFS came around to the Euro's data- which is good... but this path would give us more impacts;

Impacts for us look to be lots and lots of rain, however gusty squalls with a tornado threat are in there. If the storm comes even closer to us, tropical storm or even hurricane force winds can't be ruled out.

I'm up dark and early with you, and will be live on WESH 2 News Sunrise with Kellianne all morning long. Join us!

SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH issued for parts of the Mid-Atlantic until 8 PM this evening.

A line of very strong storms associated with a cold front will swing through our area beginning late this afternoon. The evening commute could get quite messy as some of these storms may have the potential to produce hail and strong winds. The potential for an isolated tornado is even on the table, especially for areas in southeastern upstate NY.

Please be careful while venturing out later today. A few pop up showers may be seen during the early afternoon, but the main brunt of the storms will be knocking on our door around 4-5pm.

Stay tuned! ⚡️

Active radar shows heavy rain and snow across the entire Mid Atlantic region. What started as a mix of precip this morning, has transitioned to mostly snow for locations across LI.

Expect 1-3 inches to accumulate this afternoon before seeing a mix of precip to return later today. The evening commute looks like it will be a mess, so please take it slow on your way home.

Stay safe everyone! Hopefully this is the last of the flakes for the year ❄️
