"The smallest changes can make the biggest difference—especially when nurses have a say."

When changes are made without input from the nurses who will feel their impact the most, it’s like building a bridge without consulting the engineers. Sure, time is often of the essence, and chaos on the floor may push leaders to act fast, but skipping feedback upfront almost always leads to avoidable disruptions later.

Here’s the truth: good communication saves time, reduces errors, and improves operations for everyone.

Nurses, your insights aren’t just valuable—they’re essential.

What could change if leaders listened to you first? Share your experience and amplify your voice.

This blister pack may seem routine, but each missing pill represents a moment of intense focus and responsibility. For nurses, med pass isn’t just another task—it’s a marathon with potential risks amplified by the sheer volume of medications and constant interruptions.

Imagine the difference if nurses weren’t interrupted unnecessarily during med pass. Imagine if we worked with pharmacists to streamline medication regimens, eliminating duplicates, unnecessary doses, or combining multiple vitamins into a single dose. These adjustments could be game-changers for efficiency, safety, and reducing stress.

It’s time for leaders to look at the workload through a different lens. When nurses feel truly supported, they can provide safer, more attentive care. Let’s start valuing their focus, respecting their work, and listening to what they need on the frontlines. 🩺🙌🏽🚑

All Nurses are Leaders in Some Capacity

One of the most valuable gifts you can give to your team is the gift of effective communication.

Here are three steps to strengthen your team and reduce misunderstandings:

1️⃣ Be slow to assume someone doesn’t like you. Often, what seems like friction can simply be a difference in communication style.
2️⃣ Be slow to blame others for things that aren’t going right. Taking a step back can reveal different perspectives or new solutions.
3️⃣ Take a moment to ask yourself if there might be another way to achieve the same result.

Healthy communication is a powerful tool that eliminates unnecessary hurt feelings, drama, and distractions, allowing your team to focus on what matters most. 💙

Complexities of Leadership in Broken Systems

In our work with nursing teams, we've witnessed 'pockets of brilliance' emerge despite an organizations' history of staff turnover and quality of care issues.

While the overarching system may be broken, we've found that teams and sub-teams often design their own unofficial systems to survive within the larger framework. Bridging the gap between frontline staff and C-suite leaders can feel a bit like being a double agent in a spy movie—gathering meaningful 'intel' from both sides to design individualized care plans for the sub-system(s). These plans focus on short-term goals while understanding that the interventions will naturally impact the main system.

At the core of our work is prioritizing people, meeting them wherever they are on their journey—not just where the organization says they should be.

It's about shifting staff's sense of invisibility to an ever-present resource, empowering them to recognize their own value and contribution.

Touching lives is transformative. When staff experience that 'aha' moment and recognize themselves as the true drivers of change, it sparks a ripple effect—leading to improved satisfaction, deeper engagement, and better outcomes across the board.

Reflecting on my time in South Africa many years ago, I’m reminded of the profound lessons that came from simple, unforgettable moments:

✅ Feeding a baby elephant: This experience was a gentle reminder of the importance of nurturing growth, patience, and caring for the vulnerable—qualities that are essential in leadership.
✅ Whale watching on a crisp, breezy morning: The serene beauty of the ocean taught me the value of finding calm amidst the chaos, a lesson I carry into my work as a nurse leader.
✅ Experiencing the value of the US dollar: While I enjoyed a touch of royal treatment, it was more rewarding to bless a local maid with more than a month’s salary upon my departure. It was a reminder of how generosity can have a lasting impact, even with the smallest of gestures.
✅ Meeting warm and welcoming locals while shopping and house hunting: Their unbothered, genuine spirit was refreshing and a testament to the power of human connection, no matter where you are.
✅ A memorable encounter with Roy, a teenager at the local theater: His innocent curiosity and wide-eyed excitement when I confirmed that the USA really does have tall buildings, just like he’d seen on TV, left a lasting impression. Sometimes, it’s the simple joy and wonder that can brighten the darkest days.

Being a nurse leader is much like traveling to unknown places. It requires adaptability, openness, and a willingness to find beauty in the unexpected.

✅ Sometimes, you need to step back, savor your coffee, and gain a new perspective away from the noise.
✅ The experience is enriched by your willingness to adapt, to engage with new ideas, and to approach challenges with an open heart.
✅ Everyone carries a hidden smile within them. With the right approach—grounded in empathy and understanding—we can help staff unlock their full potential and shine.

Leadership, much like travel, is about embracing the unknown, meeting people where they are, and nurturing their growth. It’s about creating environments where individuals feel valued, heard, and empowered to give their best.
